“A French restaurant that appreciates vegetarian food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

What a great find this restaurant was; I am just sorry that it was on the penultimate day of our holiday or we would have definitely returned for another meal. As a vegetarian, eating a variety of meals in France can be quite difficult. I was pleasantly surprised when Virginie offered more than one vegetarian dish and was further amazed, when the food arrived, by the quality of the presentation, the flavours and the texture of the food. Thank you Jean-Luc for such a delicious meal.

“restaurant not to be missed in Saintes.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

We spend a very enjoyable evening here with friends. Food was delicious, well presented and staff friendly. If you are in Saintes, do not leave until you have eaten here. We will be eating here again.
I ate a delicious starter of scallops and black pudding with chestnuts followed by a filet steak with a most wonderful smoked flavour, beautifully smooth celeriac but would have prefered not to have the courgette, steaks need mushrooms ! The Cafe Gourmand desert was sensational !

“As good as it gets”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

We have been regulars here since it opened (5/6 years ago) and for good reason.
Virginie and Jean-Luc have created a quite outstanding modern restaurant with warm
professional service and superb, innovative food in stylish surroundings. The lunchtime
Formule Express must be one of the best lunchtime offerings anywhere in this region.
When visiting Saintes, do not miss having a meal here. In fact it is one of the best reasons to visit the fine old city of Saintes. Booking is essential as the locals, both French & Brits, know a good thing when they see one!!

“fusion cooking at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

We have lived near Saintes for nearly 2 years and have eaten here frequently as we find the value for money - especially the lunchtime "formule", cooking and friendly service hard to beat. The menu has been influenced by the owners travels and their time spent in New Zealand. There is often a delicious twist to what you read versus what you get e.g. the smoked salmon salad starter which is one of my favourites. The chef has combined his french cooking origins with his experience abroad to produce great quality food at attractive prices. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone in the area and we regularly take guests and family there to eat. A firm favourite!

“Best meal in a long time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2012

My husband and I were spending one night in Saintes on our way home from visiting friends in Carcasonne. Having lived in France for ten years now I have been sad to see the standard or cooking and value for money in restaurants continue to drop over the years. NOT SO HERE!!!

The Clos des Cours was exceptional. We were fortunate to arrive on a warm evening in September and so were able to dine on the terrace. I had read reviews before we chose the restaurant so I told my husband that the couple, although French, had met whilst working in Oxford, England and we joked that perhaps it was at Raymond Blanc's, Manoir aux Quatr'Saisons. When we spoke to madame it turned out that it was where they had both worked. That raised the bar of our expectations - but we were not disappointed. Madam carried out her front of house duties with the efficiency, professionalism and friendliness without too much familiarity that I would expect of someone trained by Raymond Blanc.

The food too was of a similar standard - the pigeon was out of this world. The main differences between Clos des Cours and the Manoid are 2 Michelin stars and the prices! Our menu was 27 or 28 euros (can't remember exactly) for 3 courses and no one was at all sniffy when we ordered a demi carafe of white wine for 4.80 (which was very good). Our total bill with aperatifs, coffee and digestifs came to around 100 euros and was by far the best meal we have had in France for that price in a long, long time.

i am now trying to find a reason to go back to Saintes, just so that we can experience this wonderful restaurant again.
