The fact that the building was built as a very long narrow venue to make long ropes tells most of the story. Walking around the building you can appreciate it was designed to make very long ropes. Paying to see the inside is OK and the exhibits demonstrate the techniques and machines used to make the ropes. Interesting yes, will you be any the worse for not going in to see the interior; no. Escaping from the rain might help justify and admission.

This place is definitely for history buffs. For over 100 years, all the rope for the French Navy was made in this building. Its amazing to see how it all worked. The grounds are a very pleasant place to have a picnic. Nearby, you can tour the a replica of an 18th century ship. We are glad we stopped in Rochefort!

If you really want to see an impressive rope works then go to the remarkable Chatham Dockyards. The Corderie Royale is all hype and abolutely no substance. A complete waste of time and money which is a great shame as the building structure from the outside is most impressive

The Corderie Royal is an exhibition in Rochefort, Poitou Charente, Atlantique. The buildings were renovated by the local government and now as a museum, it gives the history of how marine cables were produced, requiring a very long, quite narrow building. Fascinating history

After an expensively awful visit to the nearby swindle of the Hermione where they could not care less about value and Non French visitors we were lucky to meet Agnes who works in the Corderie Royale who gave us a personal demonstration of the Corderie to make up for the real expensive let down of the Hermione. If you are going to the Corderie seek this charming lady, fluent in English and caring who will give you a good practical demonstration of rope making. But beware the Hermione.
