“Relaxing & lovely time had by all”
Reviewed August 12, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

4 adults & 2 children (aged 6 and 12 years) stayed over a period of 2 weeks, July to August 2016, crossing by ferry from Southern England to Cherbourg and then driving about 5-6 hours (no toll roads required), plus comfort stops. It's a fairy long trip which we did in one day without any problems.

Finding the location was very difficult and so we had to phone the owners who drove out to meet with us, before guiding us to the accommodation. Therefore, the website/pre-holiday information would greatly benefit from a more detailed map/directions of the immediate area showing the local roads and landmarks leading to the location.

We must admit that the initial appearance of some parts of the interior of the Gtie was disappointingly grubby (in particular on the ground floor within kitchen and lounge), but bathrooms and bedrooms are clean. The grubby areas did require additional cleaning by us before we all felt truly comfortable before eating and relaxing. We did address this with the owners before we left, who were happy to take on board our comments. We would very much hope a more thorough check of the cleaning is undertaken in between the change over of guests in the future (on the basis that guests have primary responsibility to clean, unless you pay a supplement, but obviously we all have different standards of what is "clean").

However, once we got over this initial glitch, we had a really great time. The accommodation is basic and in places would benefit from some decoration (perhaps a new coat of paint & wall paper coming off at some edges). But, the Gite served a great base for trips out and about during the day and relaxing by the pool & BBQ in the afternoon/evenings.

The accommodation, garden and pool are right next to the horse stable and riding school. Whilst you could stay and have nothing to do with the various animals at La Saumort, we think you'll get the most out of your stay if you are comfortable around a variety of animals. In addition to the horses and ponies, there are 2 pigs, 2 goats, chickens, 2 friendly dogs and a couple of cats. Also there can be the unavoidable smell of horse poo, depending on which way the wind blows.

Sarah Pugh is a fantastic and very knowledgeable riding instructor. We had no prior experience but our children had some great introductory lessons. As a family we all enjoyed a 1 hour "hack" (riding nice and slow) around some nearby rural tracks.

We were disappointed that Wi-Fi was very poor (virtually non-existent really) so accessing the internet for the most basic of information concerning local places of interest was painfully slow. However, this prompted us to explore more on our own and also play card and board games as a family (we took some of our own games and there are some games at the Gite).

In summary, not the best place we've stayed at and so "average/adequate", but with a bit of extra love and care could achieve "outstanding". The owners are lovely people and deserve to be successful in all that they do, obviously working very hard. We wish them the very best for the future.
