“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Stayed at the hotel on 7th December in room 117, lovely clean room with good quality white cotton bedding. The bathroom had a bath with powerfull shower and plenty of hot water and lovely white towels. Only one complaint with the room is that it was cold, not much heat coming from the radiator, both in the bedroom and the bathroom, however the duvet was warm and cosy.
We had pre dinner drinks in the lovely cosy bar before dining in the restaurant and the food was very good and reasonably priced, the scallop and chorizo salad starter was enormous, followed by peppered steak and a selection of deserts which were scrumptious, all for 30 Euros. We had a bottle of Chablis which was 27 Euros, all excellent value and served by a lovely waitress.
Breakfast next day was disappointing as it was served in a small conservatory with too many tables squeezed in there. A table of 8 was placed far too near the buffet, people could not pass one another as there was barely room for one person to squeeze past the people at the table.
The receptionist who greeted us on check in was very pleasant and spoke good English.
Will definitely stay there again when in Calais, far better than a chain hotel.

This was our 2nd stay at Hotel Meurice and we will return. It was once a very grand hotel, it is much finer inside than the outside reflects. It is very comfortable, but now slightly worn but in a good shabby way. There is a grand central staircase. stay in the main part of hotel, not the newer annex. It is welcoming and they keep their dog at reception, the staff are helpful, i.e. googling something for me. There are lovely quality crisp clean bedding and big fluffy towels which they sell & quality bath gel. Breakfast is very nice, self serve and a good variety. You car park for free right outside. Its minutes from the market square, a fab farmers market ever sat morning. there are good shops and restaurants within easy walk and a wide beautiful beach 15mins away. It is far nicer to stay here if you are going to city europe than in a generic corporate hotel, City Europe is only 15mins away. its worth staying overnight and exploring Calais, there is more to it than you may think. There is a great off licence in Calias, they are so helpful.

Room Tip: request a bedroom up the grand staircase, not the annex

Couple of weeks ago we stayed at this lovely hotel and found the experience great. All set to go back there. However, when we returned home we found that we had insect bites all over us. Apart from being at home, where we have had no reoccurrence of the bites, this was our only destination. This made it highly likely we got the bites at this hotel. We did complain by email but with no response. Room 116 as we recall.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 116

We loved it the moment we stepped in. It is somewhere between shabby chic and eccentric. Our room decor was individual to say the least and the small shower room had two doors. The bed was a large double, with good bedding. Ample hot water and a window that opened over a small park, though there was no control over the heating.

The underground garage is an experience in itself, containing various vintage cars and with oriental rugs at the entrance. The website offers special deals for those who arrive in a Rolls or Jag. We paid £5 to park here as our car was full of wine, but otherwise the street outside looked fine.

An adorable little wood panelled bar with cartoons on the wall and worn leather armchairs.

The restaurant La Diligence is under separate management but the receptionist made us a reservation. The food was excellent. The Calais Rotary Club was meeting and eating in a separate room, and they probably know good food when they see it.

The dog was welcomed in both bar and restAurant. There is a resident dog too, with his bowls in reception.

Breakfast was included in the special deal where you pay in sterling cash. Breakfast was excellent. Freshly squeezed orange juice, Nespresso coffee, good quality jams, hot food, local cheese....even hot milk for coffee. Worth paying for if not included.

The only possible negative was Internet access which seemed to cost 10E. These days I think you expect it free, or it could be free with drinks....

My husband says he will never stay anywhere else in Calais and wants to come back for a special weekend.

The perfect place to spend the night in Calais. Little more than a stone's throw from the Car Ferry, it is far better than other hotels in Calais. The elegant design and furnishings, admittedly a little aged, allow much more space. We were grateful that the restaurant was open on a Monday evening, the meal was reasonably priced (we suggest the menu du jour) We used the secure parking although there were spaces outside the building. One piece of advice, we booked on line at their website and didn't realise that when they quote in stirling or euros, the stirling price which is quoted is for cash payment, which is excellent value, so have some currency with you. It's very good value even for card payment. Good welcome and service. We now wouldn't go anywhere else.

Weekend shopping trip with the in laws. It was very warm and comfortable and we were made to feel very welcome by the friendly and very helpful staff. We stayed in superior doubles and the beds were so, so comfortable with egyptian cotton coverings. The shower facilities were a little dated but somehow that added to the feel of the place which is that of faded elegance. The buffet breakfast was good, with French style sausages and bacon, and a good selection of cereals , meats, fruit and pastries, but the breakfast room is a bit of a tight squeeze. Our biggest disappointment was that the restaurant was closed for the day for an outside function. We had stayed at the hotel about 10 years ago and the meal then had been fabulous. We would like to thank Sonia at the reception for getting us a table at Restaurant Channel. It was fabulous. The hotel is full of charm and character and comes highly recommended. Even the in laws loved it!!

This three-star hotel lies not far away from the rue Royale. I gather the original hotel was destroyed in the war. The replacement building looks unpromising from the outside butthis impression is belied by the faded opulance of the interior. Dark woodword, subdued lighting and a wonderful wrought iron staircase greet you as you pass through the entrance.
There are chairs and settles throughout the public areas and the tiny but efficient lift gets you safely to the first floor.
Our room - described as a "superior double" - was spacious enough although a distinct lack of electrical sockets/adapters meant craling under the table to plug in either the lamp or the kettle! Tea and coffee is provided, but bring your own fresh milk.
The loo was seperate from the bathroom, rare in French three-star hotels. The bed, bed linen and pillows were top quality. Best night's sleep imaginable.
Tip: Get down early for beakfast to get the scrambled egg while it's edible. Croissants and bread were top quality.
Worth paying a bit more to stay here.
