“Accessible, Convenient, Very Helpful Staff”
Reviewed March 2, 2010

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Coquelles last weekend with my partner and a couple of friends. Have to say we got a very good advance booking rate (including breakfast). Yes, there is the additional 20 Euro per person per room but still good value. We found all the staff to be very friendly unlike some of the other reviews and they couldn't do enought to help. Gym/Pool etc was excellent. Only slight gripe are the bar prices but there are fridges in every room so you can bring your own wine/beer and there are ice machines on each floor. Have to say we were pleasantly surprised with our stay. The hotel is located a few kms from the lovely village of Wissant which is well worth a visit especially the restaurants and beach.

We stayed here for a one night stopover before heading back to the UK via Eurotunnel. The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. Didn't use the swimming pool but looked good. Bedrooms were ok, the bathroom smelt a little damp, but was clean. Double bed was comfortable - we both had a good night's sleep. We had breakfast which was, again, good - a selection of hot food (bacon, scrambled eggs, sausages, toast) as well as the usual continental fayre. Hotel was very easy to find and signposted from the main A16 road and there is plenty of car parking spaces (free). We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant (room service seems quite reasonably priced) but instead went to a nearby shopping centre (5 minute drive), Europort, where there are a number of restaurants and supermarkets - open until 10pm at least.

All in all a good standard of hotel and would definitely stay there again if we were using Eurotunnel (5 mins drive) and needed a stopover.

We had two rooms as a family and were hit, as other people have mentioned, by the extra charge for a second person in a room, we were also disappointed that the severely limited opening hours for the pool and gym meant we were unable to schedule a visit when it was open. Having said that the rooms were spacious and comfortable with enormous baths - luxurious to lie in. On arrival we had a snack lunch - but not all items on the menu were available. Dinner was fine, enormous quantities of meat and well cooked. Buffet breakfast gave a nice range of food to suit many national traditions . Very handy to City Europe Shopping Centre and the Tunnel, and away from any noise.

Via the Holiday Inn web site we enquired the cost of a double/twin room for one night and we were quoted 64 Euro. However, when we paid they charged 84 Euro because, although the room was a double, they charge an additional 20 Euro for the second person. That additional charge was included in their e-mail confirmation but was only shown 'at the bottom'. So, be careful.

We decided to have a 2-day shopping trip with friends so booked two double rooms on-line. Coquelles very handy for shopping and close to the Tunnel. I didn't notice the small print which says you get charged an extra 20 euros for the SECOND person in a room- what a con! So we ended up paying £120/night including breakfast. Rooms were pretty ordinary and one room wasn't very clean. Arriving at the hotel after lunch and looking forward to a swim we discovered that the pool was reserved for staff use until 5.00pm. Also it didnt open till 9.00am- not much time for a swim before breakfast! Bar expensive and dominated by a huge tv screen and the outside seating full of coach parties. Staff at reception were not welcoming even though we had a hotel priority card.

We booked two double rooms and on arrival were given rooms on the opposite side of the building to each other. When we entered our room we were concious of a loud whirring noise ( aircon not turned on). The room was lovely, large and overlooking the park and carpark below. Contacted reception and a receptionist immediately came and showed us another room, near our son and daughter in law, which was fine.
Later discovered that the first room was positioned directly below the hotel central air con system.

The hotel is large and quiet and we slept soundly. it is in a beautiful location
Breakfast was fine, staff very friendly and helpful. We had drinks in the hotel the first night then went to a local sea food restaurant in Calais ( Sole Meuniere which was wonderful).

The second night we decided to eat in the hotel Restaurant . There was one choice only at 27 Euros on the set menu, though there was a greater A la Carte choice .We chose the set menu and were disappointed, as it appears were most people.
The starter was fine. The main course which was chicken in paprika was just that. A piece of chicken with paprika on both sides, petit pois peas and a baked potatoe which had been emptied and refilled with potatoe and ,I think mushrooms ( grey in colour.) No sauce. Not only did the dish look unappetising but it was bland and dry. I complained to the waiter and he said he would tell the chef.
Dessert was fine.
Coffee, not included in the price consisted of a china dish, small cup of expresso coffee, a small creme brulee, a small cream slice and a french patiserie and a pot of whipped cream. Which was wonderful if we had ordered afternoon tea instead of a main meal.
The Restaurant apart, we loved our stay and would definately pay the extra to come here, but would eat our evening meal in the town.
