“Better than expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

We booked 2 family rooms (2 double beds in each room) for 3 adults and 1 child. Needless to say really comfortable as each could have a bed if so wished. The rooms were clean with choice of pillows. Mini bar and for us a pleasure as our rooms overlooked the harbour. Sadly we were only there for just 1 night as it was a treat for our 8 year old grandson who wanted to travel on a "BIG" ship. Luckily for us he meant a ferry and not a cruise ship! The Manager was so helpful and recommended places for us to eat in the town. He spoke perfect English as our French is very little. The staff we came into contact with were very friendly. The housemaid found I had left a very expensive goose down pillow and informed Reception straight away and luckily we returned to the hotel to use the toilets and the pillow was brought down to me. The public toilets were very clean and fresh and definitely a good indication of a good hotel. We were fortunate to park immediately in front of the hotel entrance for free. All in all, very good value for money and definitely recommended.

Close to the port and town centre. Excellent market on the day of our departure. Loads of free parking opposite. Good clean room and friendly staff. Strangely we were given a complimentary bottle of American wine despite being in France. Awful wine, which we saw in a bargain bin for €2.50 later!

Nearby to food, port etc. Hotel fairly clean, friendly staff. No underground free parking, but there is side road to park. Not much to do in the hotel, or outside, however I was there for new years so most places were closed. Not everyone spoke English but they were polite. Was a good short break.

stopped overnight to break up a 14 hour drive. The hotel is ideally located in the centre of town with plenty of outdoor parking across the road (didn't use the underground car park). Staff are friendly and polite and even chuckled at my shocking French! we stayed in a two double bed room which is fine for a family with teenage kids with a little judicious use of the bathroom. We had an excellent meal in the Milan Pizza restaurant in the square immediately behind the hotel. all in all an extremely convenient stay 5 mins from the ferry and 10 from the tunnel

A hotel with a brand name, but the service and atmosphere are those of a smaller more intimate hotel. Staff are very friendly and willing to help. Breakfast is very good and worth going hungry for the night before, fresh and varied. Going south, it is well worth finishing your day here instead of Dover. The good breakfast notwithstanding, it gives you an extra two and a half hours into your continuing journey. Likewise travelling to the U.K., spend the night here after a long days drive north. We had a newly renovated room with a harbour view (an added interest) and the facilities were very good. For shopping, Cité Europe is quite close, and there are good shops in Calais itself. Bars and restaurants are close at hand. When we travel north to south and return, this is our hotel of choice.

This was our second stay in a couple of years. The first time we had a standard room, which was clean and comfortable but small. This time we had a superior room which was a very good size and had everything we needed. There were English speaking entertainment channels available on the t.v. (not just news channels)

The only reason I don't rate this hotel with top marks is because the public facilities are limited. There is a small bar area and a restaurant but no other public seating areas so, if you are travelling with friends or a family group (especially if you have children in your party and you don't want them sitting in the bar) you have no option other than to sit in your bedroom or go out.

The location is good, the hotel is at the beach end of Calais (the beach is attractive with shops, cafes, restaurants) so a good walk to the main shopping area but also an easy drive to the huge edge-of-town shopping areas of Cité Europe and Coquelles.

The hotel overlooks the harbour which, if you are staying there before catching the ferry the morning after, is a bit deceptive as you have to drive all the way out of town to access the entrance to the ferryport, then drive back to the area that the hotel overlooks. Traffic and road works were bad on our recent visit and the journey to the ferryport took 25 minutes although the SatNav estimated it would take much less than that. On our previous visit (late in 2010 with thick snow on the ground) it took us even longer to get to the ferry.

We’ve found parking on the street easy, in fact the first time we stayed the door to the underground car-park was out of action and we had no choice but to park on the street. Having done it once this is the option I would always choose, although if you are carrying valuables the secure parking would probably be advisable and if you visit in summer it might not be as easy to find a space.

Both times we've stayed we've been very impressed by the staff, very friendly, very helpful and willing to speak French to you if you want to try to keep your French in working order.

We had room service from the rather basic menu, it was all delivered quickly and it was hot, good quality and decent portions. I was told that the soup of the day was vegetable and it was actually tomato, so in future I’ll ask “Which vegetable?”

Our next trip to France will be with friends and, in spite of the fact that the public areas are limited, this is where we will stay.

It belongs to a chain yet manages to be personal and friendly, something that rarely happens. The management obviously intend to keep up the good work as they actually invite you, with a note on your invoice, to write a review on Tripadvisor – something they would surely not do if they had any intention of allowing their standards to slip.

It’s not often I feel like saying “Well done!” after a hotel stay but I certainly did in Calais.

Room Tip: Not sure if all rooms have a harbour view so ask for one when booking, if you want a very pleasant...

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for staying with us and for your very interesting comments.
I will forward your congratulations to my staff.

I have one concern regarding the time it took you to drive to or from the ferry port: it should not be more than 5 minutes and for sure you do not need to drive all around the city. Next time you come and stay with us, look for the lighthouse and you will find our hotel 200m further.

I look forward to welcoming you again and wish you a very happy New Year.

Kind regards

Another christmas shopping weekend stay at this hotel, and as usual a very good stay. This hotel is somewhere I stay every year, summer and winter and always enjoy. The staff are friendly helpful and efficient, the hotel spotlessly clean and the facilities and location just what I want. Breakfast is good and there's plenty of choice and the coffee is excellent. Parking outside is good although the hotel has an underground car park accessed by lift. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby, and a walk up to the town hall to see the xmas lights is worthwhile. Thoroughly reccomend it.
