Description: Au Cote d'Argent restaurant right on the water at Calais faces the seawall with fascinating views of the watery parade of sea ferries churning in and out. The dining room puts you in the mood for excellent seafood, with varnished wood-panelled walls, marine blue carpeting and upholstery, nautical detailing and huge plate glass windows for viewing the waves. Chef Bertrand Lefebvre trained with some of Frances greatest chefs Paul Bocuse among them before opening his own restaurant here. The cuisine is simple, elegant in a selection of menus that include dishes like chicken livers sauted with mushrooms in sherry, fillet of red mullet with rice and shellfish with saffron or half lobster without shell but with coral sauce. The service is warm, the cooking refined and sophisticated, the wines are French and the experience a delight.

This restaurant remains a wonderful place to eat in Calais. I'm not sure about the odd quibbles on here recently but we had an excellent meal and the fruits de mer was excellent. We certainly cannot eat out to this standard and this price in East Anglia! You do need to remember that this is a French restaurant and that is a major part of its appeal as well as the fantastic view of the beach and the harbour where there is always something interesting to see. Go for the €28 menu with a bottle of the house wine and you will not be disappointed.

The restaurant looks out over the sea near the ferry port and is fitted out in a nautical style. Quite kitsch really but very French kitsch! It's one of a group of 'Toques d'Opale' gastronomic restaurants in Calais which specialises in promoting classic French cuisine. As usual you won't be disappointed in the fixed price menu, and we were there for a Thursday lunch so no disgrace to opt for the 18 euro deal, the wine list was not stupidly priced either. The dessert trolley was fabulous and the cheese! Local hand made cheeses and so gorgeous sitting in their own wheeled trolley. Why can't we eat like this in the UK?!

Everything matched our expectations, as primed by prevoius reviews except... the fruits de mer. The crab was dry in the claw and soggy in body. The plateau is reasonably priced, although possibly charging more might make it make it look more generous in variety and size. This might be quibbling but after over 30 years of eating in and around Calais we know that it can be better. But we certainly plan to go back...

A friend known for his wide knowledge of wine and all things edible recommended us to this restaurant and we were certainly not disappointed. With the new French drink/drive laws we did not venture to take the wine but my lobster was absolutely delicious as was the sole "entiere" enjoyed by my lunch companion. They kept bringing you little things to eat in case you were fainting with hunger on arrival, and petits fours with the coffiee. The outside is unimpressive, bordering on the shabby but that makes the interior all the more of a pleasant surprise. We imagine that is is run by the chef and his wife who is "front of house". She is charming and he came out as we were leaving to modestly ask if we approved of his offerings! The staff speak good English and were helpful and not a bit snooty for such gorgeous presentation. We shall certainly go again asap. Unfortunately we visited on a day of thick fog but could see that it was a lovely situation. They have a very good website on which you can make a booking. We also did not think it was expensive for what you got.
