Description: Au Cote d'Argent restaurant right on the water at Calais faces the seawall with fascinating views of the watery parade of sea ferries churning in and out. The dining room puts you in the mood for excellent seafood, with varnished wood-panelled walls, marine blue carpeting and upholstery, nautical detailing and huge plate glass windows for viewing the waves. Chef Bertrand Lefebvre trained with some of Frances greatest chefs Paul Bocuse among them before opening his own restaurant here. The cuisine is simple, elegant in a selection of menus that include dishes like chicken livers sauted with mushrooms in sherry, fillet of red mullet with rice and shellfish with saffron or half lobster without shell but with coral sauce. The service is warm, the cooking refined and sophisticated, the wines are French and the experience a delight.

What I found most pleasing about this restaurant was the impeccable service; it's done properly, the old fashioned way -- they even have a desert trolley! I also liked the impressive cheeseboard, which was the best I've seen -- huge selection. Starters and main courses were well put together but not outstanding. For my personal taste, most dishes were a little too salty. They have a good wine list, but much like the main menu it's a little pricey; you pay for the location here! Overall, I'd rate this place as good but no cigar...

We have been to this restaurant on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The front tables in the restaurant have a panoramic view over the sea and harbour where you can watch the UK ferries come in and out. This time we went for a three course lunch on our way back home via the tunnel. The staff are really friendly and the service excellent. The meal was delicious and especially if you are into sweets. There is wonderful choice of desserts from the trolley. Overal a gourmet experience and good value for money at 17.5 Euros. We look forward to our next visit.

My wife and I have lunched at Au Cote d'Argent at the end of return trips through France for a few years now prior to catching the ferry home. (We used to call in at Le Channel before it poshed itself some years ago, put in a glass floor so that you could see into the wine cellar and generally hiked up it prices but not the quality of its food.) We have never been disappointed. The setting is fun – like an Edwardian liner stranded on the harbour – and the menus are sensibly priced too.

The Menu Plaisir is usually the best bet at around 36 Euros, most recently including foie gras and excellent langoustines followed by perfectly cooked sea bass and red mullet. A generous cheese selection and a dessert ‘chariot’ round off a brilliant way of savouring the last moments of holiday before the channel crossing. One small niggle though. The chef, Bertrand Lefebvre, is clearly very talented and I wonder if he really needs to shuffle by the side of your table seeking adulation. He must know that he can cook and that his front of house staff are very capable of delivering food to the table with friendly efficiency.

Probably the best of the three in this block if not the cheapest, with a pleasantly uncramped room and classy cooking by a chef associated (pix on wall) with the great Paul Bocuse. Friendly welcome and charming staff. We had the 32 euro menu. Tasty little creamed herring freebie. My langoustines were sparklingly clear-tasting in a delicious broth with a fresh pea puree. Then a good big pair of red mullet fillets on ratatouille with a creamy red pimento sauce of excellent depth & a mix of red & tiny yellow lentils. Husband's foie gras followed by sea bass on fennel equally good. It all tasted so fresh & "clean". Local cheeses on the huge-choice board as well as a perfect St.Marcellin. Sweet trolley perhaps had too many half-used items (even though we were an early table) for perfection but our choices were fresh & good. Another for our "yes again" list.
