When travelling through Calais, we often take a break to have dinner at le Venezia before catching a late night Eurotunnel back to UK.

They have an extensive Italian menu, and the staff are very friendly (some English spoken here). The service is good - one of the waiters is a real character - singing his way through the orders! The pizzas can be recommended.

Plenty of locals appear to frequent this place and all indulge in conversations with the staff, which all adds to the cheerful atmosphere. The decor is a bit stereotypical, but it's fine.

Now when can we manage a trip to France again??

Sunday lunch on December 11th. Sat by the counter and had 2 lovely pizzas and the best Cafe Gourmand ever - with 5 little puddings. Add in a small carafe of wine and you have a great lunch for 2 for 36.50 euros. The staff were friendly and welcomed us both to the restaurant with a handshake and a warm greeting. The food was excellent quality and we left full and content

Unfortunately we stopped for lunch here on Tues 25 October - bad decision. Only two tables occupied on our arrival by French people (thought that was a good sign). The restaurant filled up quite rapidly thereafter - again with French people. Strangely, even though they arrived after us, their meals arrived before ours.

My partner chose pizza and I decided on lasagne bolognaise. Oh dear! The pizza looked & apparently tasted OK, but nothing special. We asked for freshly ground black pepper. The waiter just pointed to a small pepper pot on the table - that was it! I asked twice for parmesan. When it eventually arrived it was in a plastic shaker. It took several 'shakes' to get some out. It smelt and tasted very strange. I expect it was parmesan - many months ago. My lasagne was served in a cast iron dish and was very, very hot. Must have been under the grill for some time - very burnt on top. When it finally cooled down (by this time my partner had almost finished his pizza) I regretted my choice. It was very bland and extremely greasy. Very poor quality minced beef. No sign of bechamel sauce. Tried a small quantity and left the rest.

The decor left alot to be desired - pink and green. The whole restaurant had a 'grubby' feel to it. The waiter had quite a surly attitude; he was more interested in talking continuously to a table occupied by 3 French ladies.

Not a good experience.

Very good option for a hungry family. The waiter (owner?) sang out the order in friendly Italiano fashion! Everything arrived quickly and was perfectly well cooked.
