Though you can visit the hortilonages in a group tour or access certain area on foot. I highly recommend renting a small motorboat for 2- 3 hours to enjoy the freedom of exploring the waterways at your own rate. These are available from April to October as part of a land art exhibition and you are provided with a map indictaing the places you can alight.

The boat trip through the canals was very relaxing and the gardens visually interesting but the commentary was only In French with no information in English, so I felt as though we missed out in hearing more about the gardens and their owners. However, it is in France......so guess I can't complain too much! We probably waited about an hour from lining up for tickets to actually getting in the boat.

I had a spare hour in Amiens and took this tour. Previous comments about the French commentary are correct, but in reality you do not need a commentary. Check the history on the internet first and just relax and enjoy the 50 minute trip on a quiet boat. It is a very peaceful time, with interesting private gardens on show.

Very interesting to tour around these canals. Unfortunately our boat skipper had very little english & we have very little french so we did not understand much of what was said. enjoyable all the same.

This leisurely boat trip was an unexpected pleasure, recommended by our French host. For a small fee we hired a boat with a small battery run outboard motor - easy to use. We were provided with a visitor guide, in English and French, which described 18 gardens and 11 art installations. We were able to explore the gardens on foot and enjoy the serenity and uniqueness of the Hortillonnages. We were told these were originally swampy areas where peat was mined. The removal of peat created the islands which then became market gardens. Many are now private gardens and some remain as vegetable gardens, while others have become wild. The art installations add a new dimension to these islands.
