“A Novel Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

This leisurely boat trip was an unexpected pleasure, recommended by our French host. For a small fee we hired a boat with a small battery run outboard motor - easy to use. We were provided with a visitor guide, in English and French, which described 18 gardens and 11 art installations. We were able to explore the gardens on foot and enjoy the serenity and uniqueness of the Hortillonnages. We were told these were originally swampy areas where peat was mined. The removal of peat created the islands which then became market gardens. Many are now private gardens and some remain as vegetable gardens, while others have become wild. The art installations add a new dimension to these islands.

“peaceful and relaxing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

Guide spoke only in French, but to us it did not really matter, although he obviously had lots of amusing anecdotes. We were there to enjoy the tranquility of the setting, flowers, fruit trees and vegetable gardens, and serenity of the old tiny dwellings in this very historic water setting. The small motor on the 12 person flat bottom boat was electric so no fumes or noise.

“A pleasant boat trip.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

We decided to take the boat tour round Les Hortillonnages after seeing a publicity leaflet in our gite. When we asked about a tour in English we were given a leaflet and told that this would explain everything. NO, it didn't!! It gave a brief overview of Les Hortillonnages, but gave very little detail. The guide spoke only in French - I'm sure we missed lots of interesting information which I would have liked to hear. The boat trip was pleasant, despite some of the other passengers deciding that they had to stand to take photos which meant that they were blocking the view of other people.
It's a reasonable way to spend an hour on a sunny day - if you don't speak French, you'll miss a lot.
