What a perfect area to take an afternoon walk and explore the canal of Amiens. Thoroughly enjoyable however ensure you take a coat if you are travelling in the cooler months as the wind can be deceitful .

My husband had particularly wanted to see the Hortillonnages, and as we were there in March, the boat trips had not yet started. We walked along the tow path, a 7km round trip, but were able to cross the canal and have lunch at the Pré-Porus en route.
As a pedestrian, you could in all probability see far more than would be possible from a boat; on the other hand, there are parts of the hortillonnages that are only accessible from the water. It was a gentle walk, and I very much appreciated the panels that told you of the history of the area, and what wildlife you could see, and the traditions of the hortillonneurs, and how the houses along the canal had developed from the original sheds to house tools etc. (They are only written in French, though.) We loved the many different types of bridges and gates crossing the little side water, and were glad of the seats by the lake! It was a very peaceful and enjoyable walk, even though it was a rather grey and somewhat drizzly day in early March. There is a splendid view of the cathedral as you return: it seems almost to float above the town, although why on earth they built some concrete monstrosity that ruins the view as you get closer I cannot imagine. We took our time, and thoroughly enjoyed our walk.

I loved kayaking around Les Hortillonnages in Amiens. The landscaping on the islands was gorgeous! Also, the view of the cute city was very nice.

It's well worth it. I rented kayaking boats from the Club Nautique Rivery with a group of friends and it was perfect. That had a good selection of kayaking boats and equipment to rent.

The kayaking was easy and peaceful.

Loved it.

I went on a 45-minute boat trip around the hortillonages. It was 5.90€ and definitely worth doing. The driver/guide had a lot to say and although I only understood a little bit, the French passengers thought he was very funny!

The 'Hortillonnages' in Amiens are a collection of artificial islands reclaimed from the marshes along the river Somme, where a variety of flowers and vegetables are grown for local markets and restaurants. Some of them are linked by bridges and so can be accessed on foot. Others can only be accessed by boat. It is possible to take a boat trip along the many canals, known as 'rieux' which links the islands, which is a very relaxing way to visit this unique place. The banks are decorated by a riot of colourful flowers and shrubs and to encourage this, competitions are held annually for the most outstanding floral displays. When we visited, there was an exhibition of various pieces of modern sculpture, some of which sat well with the natural environment, while other pieces seemed out of place. However, it was an interesting and very pleasant experience.
