“Avoid La Mere Poulard”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

La Mere Poulard was totally unacceptable. Front desk person did not understand the simplest questions when asked in English language. The small room has minimal space for hanging clothes. Bahroom lighting is so dim it is almost impossible to apply make-up when using the mirror. Room lighting is too dim to work or read and there is no air conditioning available if the weather is warm as it was during our stay. The room is stuffy with no air movement. We opened the windows but the flies invaded and we spent the whole evening swatting flies. So the option was to close the windows and swelter. Stay elsewhere, perhaps off site if you visit Mont Saint Michele. Steep stairs led to our room with no one to help with our luggage.

What I like about this restaurant is that the menu changes regularly. We have each been with my partner for a walk to the Mont Saint Michel and never miss the opportunity to lunch in a restaurant Mère Poulard. The food is excellent and refined. There's something for everyone, all of which enjoy the small and big appetites.

We wanted to stay near by Mont Saint Michel and therefore chose the most typical hotel La Mere Poulard. Excellent choice for a spacious suite, which had a glorious view, was tastefully decorated and very comfortable. I'm not surprised that so many personalities are at least one day rendered at La Mère Poulard. Luxury and awesome stay guaranteed!

The speciality giant omelettes that the hotel restaurant is renowned for, were both delicious and very good value for money. The warm and cozy piano bar offered a unique view over the bay of Mont Saint Michel and guaranteed many unforgettable evenings. We loved the hotel shop because it allowed you to recreate your dining experience once back at home, by offering sales of gourmet products, cooking brass tableware and cookbooks.

Mont Saint Michel itself was quite breathtaking, especially early mornings and late evenings when the crowds had dispersed and as this hotel was the first hotel you could see after entering the Mont, the location was ideal. I would highly recommend La Mere Poulard, especially if you require a traditional and historic experience.

Room Tip: If you find climbing stairs difficult, opt for a room on the lower floors, as this hotel did not hav...

We received an email 2 days before our arrival to inform us they had "IT" issues and had to cancel our reservation and had booked us at a Best Western over 7 km from MSM. They did offer us dinner for two not including drinks. I had called them a month before to confirm our hotel reservation and make a dinner reservation. When I called to reiterate this they said despite that, they were sorry they could not accommodate us. Through our french guide we did find another hotel on MSM for the night. We went to La Mere Poulard that night for our free dinner. The staff was very apologetic about our hotel reservation being cancelled. But the dinner was the worst meal we had during our entire trip through Normandy. Even so dinner would hardly makeup for no place to stay if this had happened during high season?

La Mere Poulard is called out in the guide books for its "world famous" omelets and as a place to stay while on Mount-St-Michel. What they don't say is that the place is packed with tourists trying to photograph people making the famous omelet and as a paying guest you have to fight your way in. We stayed in a fourth floor room -- a real climb up -- that was small but ok. We had a great view over the new bridge being built to replace the causeway.

Getting there is a hassle. First you must find Parking Lot 3 and use your pass code (make sure you get one from the hotel before you arrive) to get into the parking lot. Then, you have to cram yourself into a bus jammed with people along with your luggage. Next, you go for drive out on the causeway where the bus dumps you and your luggage out about a quarter of a mile from Mount-St-Michel. Don't carry a big bag, just take what you need for the night. There is a lot of climbing and a lot of steps in Mount-St-Michel. After dragging your bags to the hotel, you'll find you can't check-in until 4:00 p.m. and they have no place for you to store you bag except next to the front door where seemingly thousands of people pass by every day.

The famous omelet also cost 50 Euros! 50 Euros! Waaay too much. Not good value for money. They charge that much because you have no other real options. Beware.

I am surprised the guide books treat this place as kindly as they do. I guess it is all down to location, location, location. It is value for money.

Room Tip: The the causeway project on-going, it will be noisy until they stop at night.
