Hotel Restaurant La Mere Poulard

We stayed in this hotel mainly for the location. It is the first hotel as you enter the Mont so you do not have to drag your luggage too far. We also wanted to be able to explore the island before and after the crowds- and the crowds do come! (We were happy to be departing as they descended on the island.) It is fun to be able to be right there, and for that reason the hotel was perfect.
But, be forewarned, you will have to climb lots of narrow, winding, steep steps to get to the rooms - at least 3 floors worth! Rooms are very small and very shabby. Bathroom was interesting...hand held shower head, but no place for it to hang up high. Price was very high for the quality of accommodations, but unfortunately everything from hotels to restaurants are very overpriced here - so it you want to go to the Mont, you will pay for that privilege. We did not eat the breakfast at the hotel. It was an extra charge and very pricey. They did have free wi-fi at the hotel.
Overall, if you can handle one night in a basic accommodation, this hotel will do since the location is great.

The only advantage of this hotel is its location. But it is not worth staying in Mont Saint Michel; travellers would be better off staying at an alternative location and visiting the mount during the day.
The hotel rooms are all on upper floors and there is no lift, so beware those who have difficulties climbing stairs.

The restaurant was pretentious, expensive, and not very good. The only good thing on it are the famous crepes.

Room Tip: Rooms in first floor

We used Booking.com to make this reservation January 9. 2011. We emailed the hotel January 10th to confirm the reservation with the hotel. They did confirm and I followed up with two more contacts to make sure our rooms were available. We arrived only to be told our rooms would not be available. They offered us a hotel off the Mont. We called Booking.com and they could do nothing. Nothing they promised us happened. We were placed in a hotel with bat flying down the hall, feces on the toilet, mold in the tub, etc. Needless to say, we were not happy with La Mere Poulard or Booking.com. Also, beware. Booking.com will not let you rate a hotel if they do not give you a room. So, you have no way of knowing if this happens everyday.

What a magical experience it was to spend the evening at this hotel...AND wake up to the island/abbey without all of the tourists. We also enjoyed the restaurants without all of the crowds also. Our room had a great view, but was very small and required at least five flights of stairs.. so be prepared and leave your luggage in the car (hidden).. and backpack it. It was great to see the chefs as they work right up front- great photo opp.
Breakfast was 'so so' for $15 ...but the over all memories are amazing. I woke up early to paint the morning light on the island and it was beautiful! The whole Mt ST Michel is really not as big as I imagined- and there is so much more of the abbey/church to explore.
Avoid the tourist shops...EXPLORE! We also drove around the area and found some nice views OF the island for the northeast and southwest...what a dreamlike place it all is.

Room Tip: Book early and cross your fingers.

Yes, it is right on the little island. So in the morning you have a little while before the overwhelming amount of other tourists come for their visit. The room we had was shabby and not very well cleaned. The bed was small and uncomfortable. The bathroom was ok. We did have a very nice view. I guess that is what you are paying for. If you go, bring only what you need for the night. You will have to climb many stairs with your belonging. There is no elevator. Don't bother eating at the restaurant.

There are pros and cons to staying both inside and outside the Mont -- at La Mere Poulard, it is true that you can wander all over the island after the day visitors have arrived. And if you have a room that overlooks the abbey, you can open your windows directly to the stone magnificance! The hotel itself is not as old and bad as has been described. Yes, there is no elevator, so we just packed a tote with stuff for one night and left the suitcases in the car. Yes, the stairway is spiral and sort of narrow, but not that bad! The service is fine, very professional. We didn't like the first room because it had one bed and we had requested two, so they switched us right away. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was long and spacious. The disadvantage of staying within the walls is that you don't see the entirety of the Mont the way you could if you stayed outside along the avenue. I've heard the sight of the Mont slipping in and out of the mist is really spectacular. We did not eat at La Mere Poulard because it was very expensive. Instead, we ate at the Mouton Blanc which was very good!

Room Tip: A room that opens to the Mont is good

Le Mere Poulard hotel, Mt St Michel

First of all, Mt St Michel is a spectacle- charming, mysterious, and magical. You have to come here at least once in your life. Staying on the island was even more amazing, granted the Mere Poulard hotel is quite the dated property. The hotel is old, yet charming in it's own way. We had a room on the top floor (4th) overlooking the water/parking area. The location is prime- it's the first thing you see when you go in, so you can't miss it. There are a lot of tourists though, no matter what season, and the hotel seems to cater to Japanese tourists. For mid-winter I counted at least a dozen tour buses and possibly a thousand cars in the parking lot. If you arrive by car, ask for the gate code ahead of time and you can park quite close to the hotel. But do be warned: you will have to carry you luggage up into the main street, and then up a lot of stairs in the hotel (4th floor in our case!). There is no elevator. Best thing to do is to bring up only what you will need for your stay and leave the rest of your clothes in your car.

The room was extremely small and looked like a cheap motel room upon entering, complete with an ugly bedspread that has probably never been washed. The bed was small and uncomfortable. The red carpets were ugly and stained and the floors creaked. The bathroom was bigger than expected, yet had a tub that seemed like you could easily slip out of. There was lots of mold on the ceiling.

Despite these problems, you are here for the charm of an older medieval-type castle hotel- and that's what you get. It is especially nice once all the tourists clear out and you have the quaint village almost all to yourself.

If you want to try their famous omelet, be warned... they don't serve it during the hotel's breakfast- only for lunch or dinner. We had an overpriced breakfast at the restaurant, and ate dinner elsewhere in town (since there were some nicer places up the walking street).

I would actually come back and stay at this hotel for its place on the island, but would hope for some kind of better upkeep, and maybe some newer furnishings.
