Some people complain about the crowds and pulling your suitcases up the steep cobbled streets, then dragging your suitcases up a narrow steep staircase to a tiny room......but it is all worth while when all the tourists go and the Mont changes from a scene out of a Harry Potter tourist attraction to a magical, deserted place. Luckily you don't spend much time in the room - at dawn too the magic draws you out. That's lucky because the hotel is extremely tired, and definitely due for renovations.....but we all slept well and would do it again. When we came off the island the next day and saw all the people staying in the hotels on the mainland we knew what they had missed out on.

The rooms are weathered and worn, the bathroom smelled sour and there are 4 hair dryers to share between all hotel guests. When I asked to have a hair dryer the reception staff said "we are all out now, there's nothing we can do" after he had told me that he had one waiting for me at reception and I walked down immediately after he said that.

The best thing about spending the bucks & spending the night at Mont St. Michel is the opportunity to enjoy the glorious Mont at night & in the morning when the crowds are gone - a HUGE + !!!!
Just a short walk up the steep cobblestone lane. If you can handle the steep & varied stairways you'll find friendly staff, a room with nice views, comfortable beds & a surprisingly accommodating bathroom.
I've stayed there twice.
Only prob with MSM is that food is sooooooooooooooo xpensive. But, since it's probly a once in a lifetime experience: splurge

You would have to be a narocleptic mouton to enjoy a sound night's sleep here as the majority of the chambres face onto the winding route to the Abbey. At 6.00 am I was awakened by the sound of a Tiger Tank. I was tempted to hide in my chambre's wardrobe but it was of course too small. The roar continued so, summoning up a soupcon of courage, I crept to the window to observe a grim group of dustmen straddling their caterpillar tractor as it cleaned up Le Mont's debris.
Noise besides, I can also moan about the cost of the room and le petit dejeuner- 17 euros for a buffet of bad coffee, sugary orange juice and cold scrambled eggs. I note that the hotel is actually owned by La Mere Poulard so perhaps I should not complain too much about that bill as an omlette at La Mere's is advertised at 37 euros.

Room Tip: climbas high as your legs will take and try to get a room facing the ramparts. Fat chance probably a...

It's set in a medieval village on the Mont so it won't be your typical hotel. No matter where you stay you have to walk and this hotel is about halfway up. The rooms will be small but it's to be expected. No elevators so expect to carry your bag. We stayed on the top floor which was reached by a narrow stairway. You're on the Mont so walking is the norm. The staff was friendly and accommodating. This is a great way to see the Abbey and the crowds diminish at night.

Our recent experience was very much like "Beware, Unbelievable". Very poor instructions on parking from both the hotel and the site management. No mention of the $20 charge for parking, which we learned of on the way out. Lugged bags in the rain from parking to bus, bus uphill through main street of town jam packed with people and lined with t-shirt shops, only to learn that our prepaid reservations in the hotel also had been ignored and we were booted further up the road to awful little dingy rooms like the ones you stayed in in 1965 when you backpacked through Europe on $5 a Day. No apologies, and no reduction in price. No wifi. No hairdryer. Tiny bath. And no assistance getting our luggage from the hotel to the off-site rooms that were, by the way, difficult to find. Two flights up in a building with no lock on the front door. At dinner the server was surly and rude. The next morning, we declined breakfast and were out of MSM before 8 am. Don't bother staying in MSM -- stay at a nice hotel in St. Malo or Dinard and take their daytime tour to MSM. And avoid this hotel.

Room Tip: Find a different hotel somewhere else.

I reserved and prepaid for 2 rooms in the main building on January 19, 2014 for May 16 and 17, 2014. On May 7, 2014 I received an email from the hotel stating that a tour group needed more space, so they were canceling our room for the first night. They offered that we could book another date, cancel completely, or stay the first night off the island in Hotel Gabriel. I cannot tell you how upsetting this was. We had started our vacation already and were in Paris. Hotels were extremely booked even back in January when I made the reservation and we were booked 3 weeks in France with no flexibility to rearrange reservations. After several emails over several days we were able to extend our stay at our previous hotel but at a significant amount more and had to pack and move from two rooms to one room. Upon arriving at Mont St Michel, utter confusion set in as we expected to drive the causeway to the island and enter a code to park in hotel parking and walk a short distance to our hotel. After driving all over and asking for directions repeatedly, it turned out that we had to park off the island in one of many huge lots, walk to a bus a distance away with our luggage, and take a bus onto the island to be let off to walk again with luggage to find our hotel as we struggled through the enormous crowds. We were never informed that construction on the causeway meant no parking on the island. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were informed that in the past, it had been a regular occurrence to boot people out of their reservations for the tour groups at the last minute, but it was happening less frequently. We were then ushered to our rooms, not in the main hotel as we had reserved, but a distance away in the annex. The first sight of the rooms took our breath away.....small, dark, dingy, spartan, in a word unbelievable!!!!! You would need to see it to understand. It would take paragraphs to describe. The only saving grace was a little window in each room where we could see the water. We were above the main street
so very noisy. We were given dinner but no drinks for our trouble. The meal was pre fixe and uneatable. One server, working her heart out, with people getting up and walking out of the restaurant for lack of attention. The woman at the front desk was trying very hard under the circumstances and gets an A for effort. Now, the icing on the cake. I returned home to find that none of my money has been refunded for their canceling our first night. They did manage to charge us for the bottle of wine at dinner. The breakfast was quite nice and a saving grace along with the two hardworking young ladies. This hotel is one listed by Rick Steves as an option so I think he needs to revisit his suggestion. I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone unless they want a silly bad adventure.
