I have wanted to stay at the Grand Hotel in Cabourg for a long time: Proust has made it into the Grand Hotel at Balbec in his long book 'A la recherche du temps perdu', and he did stay there for a number of years. It is a luxury, but well worth it. My husband and myself booked a room looking on the seafront, a little more expensive than one looking on the gardens, but - again - worth every euro! The view of the sea, the tide going out and coming in, the soothing noise, and the room itself, spacious and well appointed, were a great treat. An unexpected bonus (for me at any rate as I'm a bit 'mad' about everything to do with Proust!) was that our room was just 5 doors from his on the same corridor, which meant the view he describes would have been more or less the same as the one we saw!
At every point we were made most welcome and though I'm sure we weren't the most wealthy of their customers, the hotel staff couldn't have been more helpful or courteous. I hope we can go again!
