“Poor Dosabled Access, but staff very willing to help”
Reviewed June 5, 2014

Had an overnight stay here & was disturbed to find no disabled access, however the staff were excellent lifting wheelchairs including their occupants up the steps. We found the easiest access was by the bar door as this had a bannister that reached the pavement, something others had not noticed.
The lift was very small but manageable by those able to walk a short distance.
Room was very good & spacious with a shower enclosure, thankfully not a shower in a bath which is impossible to use.
The meal was acceptable, but would have liked the house wine in a glass carafe rather than an earthernware jug. Good selection of drinks available in the bar with friendly staff.

Room Tip: Street side rooms have tram noise starting at 5 am

I have been going to the Grand for years. Originally the hotel was a truly faded old dear. Sad bedrooms and sadder staff. In the last couple of years the hotel has had a facelift and has adopted a very 1960s style. Bedrooms are not big, but have what is needed. A shower curtain in the bathroom would have been better for Brits, but otherwise it is fine.
The breakfast is not exciting, but OK. The restaurant and bar kept their original style. I really enjoyed the food and the beer/wine.
Hotel wise, it is pretty much the only game in town. Some very good restaurants in the city centre area though. Service is French.

The Grand Hotel is, I fear, redolent of Valenciennes itself: a place whose hour of glory is long past. Clearly it was designed for grandness, directly opposite the train station through which most visitors would have arrived a century ago. But now it suffers from tiredness. A small lobby leads via an even smaller lift to the rooms, many of which - according to fellow-guests - were decidedly below par. (They may have been jaundiced by a 4:00 fire alarm in one part of the hotel, which took them into the station square in their nightclothes). Mine, at the front, clearly aimed at rococco grandeur but monumentally failed to achieve it: I kept being reminded of Tom Wolfe's immortal account of the signs of Las Vegas, "They revolve, they oscillate, they soar in shapes before which the existing vocabulary of art history is helpless”, but finally decided on a house of assignation with pretension, Paris Left Bank, circa 1955. Otherwise: the breakfast buffet is standard three-star, but served in a room which is phenomenally inaccessible (in an ante-room reached by a flight of steps); the bar and restaurant are mercifully acceptable.

We stayed here for one night en route to England from Germany with Shearings. We stayed on a Saturday night and had been told that it was not the best area but we never heard or saw anything untoward.

We had a lovely twin room which over-looked an inner courtyard so nice and quiet. Evening meal was included for us and was taken in a beautifully decorated dining room. We had a lovely three course meal which was all served piping hot and plenty of it. The carafe of wine was a reasonable price.

We also had a huge bathroom (with proper bath!) and towelling bathrobes laid out for us!

A very comfortable night's rest.

Breakfast the next morning was typical continental: lovely fresh French stick and croissant, plus choice of cereal, ham, cheese, tea, coffee, juice.

We certainly wouldn't mind staying there again.

I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. It is located at the train station in Valenciennes, which is very handy, but you have to realize that it isn't the most upper class neighborhood of Valenciennes. There was some noise outside during the night, so the night rest was not that splendid. Breakfast was rather expensive, but the food was ok. the food in the restaurant was very good, but also expensive.
The room was tidy, but the decoration was rather hideous. Carpets are apparently also used to hang on the wall. But the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean. I stayed in the room with a colleague, and I found it very handy that the toilet was not in the bathroom, but separate in the room. That way, one of us could shower without the other one having to wait to use the toilet. The receptionists were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask a room on the interior of the building, to avoid noise from the street.

In 2013, it is simply amazing that an hotel can charge you almost 100€ for a hotel in such a condition. Rooms seem not to have been renovated for ages. Walls are dirty, beds are from a different era and the bathroom is old, falling into pieces, with a bathtub curtain too long and black from moisture. We ate at the Grand Restaurant of the hotel, which again, despite being better than the hotel, was too expansive with tiny portions. The whole experience is saved by the good breakfast (with live chef cooking the eggs, nice) and good hotel staff. Being a frequent traveller to Valenciennes, I will not come back to Grand Hotel next time.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated rooms, the old ones are simply depressing and filthy

The name doesn't reflect the actual condition of the Hotel. Rooms are average, with toilet separated from the rest of the bath. The room was OK, maybe a bit dark...
Personnel was kind and, at least, spoke English.
