“As good as it was 32 years ago”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

We have visited this restaurant about 8 times since Tony Lestienne took over the reins. Last night we took the 7 course tasting menu. Every course was excellent, especially the turbot, the veal and the desert. Welcome help was offered in selecting the right matching wines was and service was attentive. Wine prices often over the top in top class restaurants were reasonable. Looking forward to a future stay! Tip : stop over at the Hotel La Matelote next door.

“Excellent seafood”
Reviewed October 3, 2011

This is a first class restaurant outside the old town but just across a road from the beach and the sea. The emphasis is on classically cooked seafood and the results are excellent. We had very good lobster and turbot for example. Prices vary from relatively good value set menus to much more expensive dishes from the carte. The service is typically French in that they will not take a reservation over the phone in English and they do expect you to want to take your time over your food. Parking can be a problem. The quality of the seafood dishes trumps all other issues

“Very let down”
Reviewed September 20, 2011

Having been twice before and had excellent food, reasonable service and a expensive bill, we decided to take four friends on Saturday 17 September. The service was just like an episode of acorn antiques! The food may be good but for the price it is just not worth it as the service and atmosphere has a take it or leave attitude. We will definitely not be returning.

“Excellent food - poor service”
Reviewed September 1, 2011

I thought the food was very good (I'm not confident enough in my snobbery to say Michelin star food should be better), but we and another couple were forgotten in one of their 3 small dining rooms. Waiting 15 minutes after being seated before we were asked if we'd like a drink/wine list is a bit too long. When we did order, after a long wait when the wine came, we were each poured a glass and the bottle was placed on a table across the room. This is fine if there is an attentive wine steward. We were not drinking quickly (one bottle lasted us the whole seven-course meal) but we had to walk across the room and get the bottle ourselves to top up our glasses. I'm fine to do this, I pour my own wine all the time, but just don't charge me Michelin prices for poor service. Again, great food and great potential. I'm happy to pay for good food and good service; people should pay for this, it comes at a cost. The service portion wasn't there at Restaurant La Matelote and I would not recommend this restaurant for that reason. My experience here proves that poor service can ruin great food. We would have had a much better time spending the same amount of money (it was several hunderd Euros) at some brasserie where we weren't forgotten by the staff.

“Well worth a visit - we had a delicious lunch!”
Reviewed July 12, 2011

We ate lunch here from the 'Menu Saveurs de la Mer' - so a lot of fish! The staff were welcoming and helpful. The restaurant was very attractiively decorated in the old French style.

The food was excellent - lots of interesting flavour combinations. Presentation and attention to detail was outrstanding. We had the time, so we spent over 2 hours eating and savouring everything. Although it was Monday lunch the chef was there working - unusual as often their deputies handle the less busy days. M. Lestienne certainly knows how to cook!
