Hotel de La Matelote was fantastic - nice drive down from Calais on the coast road.
Good location, easy to find but the restaurant was the big surprise - just fantastic french style (if the nice was on the expensive side).

Enjoyed by us both.

Room Tip: Take a room at the front

We had a wonderful holiday travelling around France and thought we would spoil ourselves on the last night. What a mistake, found hotel ok. After booking over 3 weeks ago, we would have expected a better welcome, we had keys given to us for a fantastic mini suite, but up 2 flights of stairs, not a chance of any offer of help although we are fit the offer of help would have been good??? apparently we should have asked?? Tried to book for restaurant but it was full told we should have booked ahead so had to walk miles to find anything good , maybe just maybe for the price charged they could be nicer!!!! 14 nights in MUCH cheaper hotels with more helpful staff and much nicer amenities and views..Maybe you should consider that as customers we are paying your wages???

Room Tip: Ask for room without view of Nautica and no stairs

We'd booked in another Boulogne S M hotel for two nights, but found it 'disappointing'. Raced up to Hotel Matelote, greeted by very understanding reception and got a very welcome 'superior' room. Relief. Comfy room, good noise insulation from road outside, balcony, air con, pool, jacuzzi, sauna etc all made the difference. Probably won't go back to the town, but if I did, Matelote would be where I booked.

Room Tip: We had 62, which seemed to be a good compromise.

We did one night here. The hotel is in a nice old building, so the hallways are interesting and cozy. The rooms look and feel a bit outdated, though. The value for the price we paid wasn't great, but we had chosen this hotel because we had a late seating at the restaurant downstairs and didn't want to travel to a hotel from there after drinking wine with dinner. If I were going to stay here for longer, I would not stay here, but find a different hotel or a cozy B&B.

My 13 year old son and I had a quick breakaway from London and stayed in this very vice 4 star hotel. Great location, very clean and lovely crisp white sheets and comfy bed. Meal was very very good. Made to feel welcome. Would return. Small pool and jacuzzi a welcome addition. The beach opposite is truly beautiful.

We stated at La Matelote for one night as we were passing through the area, further to a recommendation from family. However, we were generally very disappointed with our stay. I'm not sure if I have ever stayed anywhere more unfriendly and generally unwelcoming in respect of the hotel staff and management. When we arrived, we were completely ignored by the hotel manager, whilst we were stood by the reception desk - he was more concerned about looking at his computer screen for the 4 to 5 minutes we stood there waiting like lemons (we were the only people, so it wasnt like there was a queue!) There was no 'welcome' or 'bonjour' or 'hope you enjoy your stay with us'. The same man was exactly the same on our departure, when we checked out and paid the bill - unfriendly, without a single pleasanterie or gratitude for our stay. He automatically added onto our bill 2x breakfasts, despite the fact that we didn't take breakfast in the hotel, so make sure you check your bill thoroughly! When I asked for a copy of the restaurant bill, he then seemed to think we might have 'additional' food bills and became rude again cross-questioning me about whether I owed more money. Seriously, for a four-star hotel I would advise people to go elsewhere where perhaps their custom is welcomed and hotel management is somewhat less pretentious, rude and snobby! I will not be going back to stay!

Booked 2 nights as a weekend getaway for the family. Service was relaxed but efficient. Rooms were large but smaller once the 2 additional beds had been added (not immediately ready upon arrival), and made getting in/out a little interesting, especially with the fireplace at the bottom of one bed. The swimming pool could have been a few degrees warmer, and should be viewed more as a large jacuzzi rather than a full-on pool. Location was good, perfect for the aquarium, and only a short walk into town. Having fussy kids, we chose to ate out so couldn't comment on how good the restaurant was, but having Michelin stars must say something, however buffet breakfast certainly did the job.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the sea front are by far the best.
