“A very pleasant find”

Located on a quite street some five minutes out of the walls - we found a warm welcome by Caroline and Martial. An unpretentious B&B lovely and clean; offering all we could desire! We hope to return again soon enroute..

La Bononia was the perfect B&B for our purposes - wanting to explore a bit of Boulogne-sur-Mer's walled city, have a picnic dinner, and be close for the next day's chunnel car ferry from Calais to the UK. Our friends from the UK, who are very familiar with the hotels in the area, found Bononia on Trip Advisor and it turned out to be just as described. The hosts were wonderfully friendly and accommodating. We had called ahead and asked if there was a place we could have our picnic indoors, and they had already created such a space in one of the two very spacious bedrooms we reserved. Breakfast the next morning was extensive - our host had even gone out for fresh bread and croissants, as he was just coming home from shopping when we came downstairs in the morning. Each bedroom had hot water pots and coffee and tea supplies. "Instructions" for guests were clearly written in French and English - the owners have put a lot of thought into what makes for a good B&B experience (including gentle admonitions about being in a house together with others and being considerate, etc). We usually stay in smaller hotels, a little more upscale with additional services, but I would not hesitate to recommend Bononia and hope to have a chance to return! A caveat for those who want a ground floor unit, all of the B&B's guest bedrooms are upstairs (no elevator), but the owners are very helpful and would carry luggage I'm sure if we had asked. Both of the larger bedrooms are unusually spacious for a B&B - a huge plus if you were staying awhile. Perhaps best of all, it's a leisurely stroll (5 minutes) to the walled city.

Room Tip: The guest rooms in this B&B are all upstairs on the same floor - two of the three are very spaci...

Caroline and Martial welcomed us into their lovely family home. Our three night stay was comfortable, with a spacious, well appointed room.We were very well situated for exploring the old town area of Boulogne. Our hosts recommended some superb restaurants only ten minutes away and even phoned our reservations for us. Breakfasts were superb and varied, and we enjoyed the attention! Highly recommended!

A superb B&B to base yourself if you are exploring Boulogne or Calais, or as we were, coming back from Paris looking for a night's break.
Extremely friendly welcome, comfortable and clean room, cosy house. Great breakfast and the feeling that nothing is too much trouble.
Very highly recommended.

We stayed with Caroline and Martial at their lovely family home in Boulogne in November. We were only on a short trip to France and only stayed one night. They are very hospitable, friendly, interesting and keen to help their guests with information about France and Boulogne itself. We stayed in Chambre Blanc Nez which is a large and comfortable room with a large spacious bathroom and evrything one would need is available and should you need anything else, one only has to ask and it is produced.
They recommended three restaurants to us, but only one was open (it was a Monday night that we stayed), and we had dinner in L'ilot Vert which was excellent (see review), and only a short walk from the house. Parking is no problem at the house either.
Breakfast was served in the family room and was a lovely continental breakfast with wonderful coffee.
Many thanks to Caroline and Martial and thanks so much for advising us to try the local cheeses. I thought the Ecume de Wimereux was outstanding and I cannot wait to return to buy some more and refill our larder at home !! Looking forward to returning to enjoy more of your hospitality and to try the other recommended restaurants.

We spent two night here and have to say that the owners, Caroline and Martial, were lovely and very helpful. Unfortunately our stay was spolit a little by the appalling weather (see my review of La Chatillon) and a total soaking, but that was hardly anyone's fault! Our room was beautifully decorated but a little small, but neverthe less very comfortable. This is not so much a B&B as someone's home in which one is a honoured guest, with the hosts joining us for breakfast and happy to make bookings on our behalf. While that level of intimacy may not appeal to everyone we thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend this place.
