This is a must do place to visit if you are ever in the region. We were travelling down to Spain and decided that it had to be done and boy was I glad that we did. What an acheivement!! A truly awesome viaduct which is a credit to the engineer (Frenchman Michel Virlogeux) and designer (Englishman Norman Foster) who built the thing. The visitor centre and parking area have been designed to allow passers by go and look at this truly wonderful structure. A definate must do!!!

This isn't just a bridge, it's a thing of complete wonder...

When heading for the south of France, I make damn sure I stop in a motel at Clermont Ferrand on the way South, after the drive from london, and the circumnavigation of the Paris Peripherique, this is an ideal spot to pull over anyway, but its worth not pushing any further south after dark, or else you'd miss the epic scenery that you will find on the A75 as it passes into the Auvergne.

Up until Clermont Ferrand, the road is boring beyond words, but as you head South from CF, you climb up into the Auvergne, and every bend in the road seems to throw an epic and unmissable vista into your field of view. It is an amazing route. It gets better the further South you go, and then you catch your first glimpse of the viaduc de Millau...

It starts as a glimpse, but then you start to get more regular and prolonged views of the bridge as you get closer. Depending upon how fast you are going, it might be an hour before you actually get there, just making you wonder even more, "how big is this thing?".

You will get there eventually, but by the time you I, you'll be absolutely gobsmacked by the sheer size of the thing.

You absolutely must pull over at the viewing area on the North side. Then climb the hill, and go look at it up close, and look into the valley below. It's simply unbelievable that it was built. The size is incredible, so tall that it defies belief. You could stand the Canada Tower at Canary Wharf, until recently Britain's tallest building, under the road deck and still have a 100 foot gap.

Amazing...

Incidentally, approached from the South, the bridge doesn't have the same visual impact. The curvature of the road approaching it masks it somewhat, so you don't really see it...

If you're on the autoroute which crosses the viaduct, take time out to stop off at the visitor centre on the north side (accessible from either direction). The climb up to the viewing area above the viaduct is steep but worth it. There is a refreshment room but unfortunately closed when we were there in December (reopens about Easter).

The bridge is amazing, truly breathtaking in an elegant, ethereal way. I was really surprised by the magnitude of it in person. As other reviewers have mentioned, the best way to view it it via the visitor center. There is a great paved trail from the base of the visitor center to a viewing point that provides the best views. Also, if you are driving west from the coast, the mountainous drive itself is really an added bonus.

it's a really cool bridge, the architecture is great and the view of the valley is impressive.
if you just want to see the bridge then I recommend to find a point from Millau city, or near Millau city is a gas station and you can stop there. It's a pitty there is no observation deck near the bridge.. you can't stop the car near the bridge... and can't walk on it. If you just want to cross the bridge there is a fee ( apx 14 euro one way )
