My husband and I were really looking forward to eating (and staying) there, and drove five hours to reach the only remaining top gastro restaurant we had yet to go to in France. After settling in our suite (architect had probably good ideas but why are all lights hallogen white ? carpeting in small squares, cheap finitions...) we were quickly brought to the bar by the pretentious Maitre D who handed us over to young unexperienced trainees. They advised us on drinks we did not touch : limonade with sureau for our son and wine with reglisse both undrinkable. Nobody asked us to replace the drinks with better choices. - the wine by the glass selection is extremely poor : macon des heritiers du comte de lafont not up to such a level-
We read with delight the cute story about Michel Bras stealing the eggs of the neighbour's farm which explained why the oeuf a la coque was his madeleine de proust. But to our dismay, we noticed that the eggs were marked with industrial numbers.
When the Maitre D finally condescended to come back to take our order, he had no proposal to make for our son. When I asked him if 'tarte aux cebes' was a mushroom tart, he scornfully replied they were onions.
When the bar was completely deserted, we decided to walk to our dinner table and had to ask 4 times for the sommelier to come.
We were presented with the Laguiole knife with 'ce couteau is going to accompany your meal' with solemnity and we had to beg after each of the 3 courses that it is changed with the other cutlery.
The omble chevalier was mixed with sweet aubergine, a strange combination. The foie gras was merelyacceptable especially if we compare it with what we tasted in Dordogne the following night.
The cote de boeuf (130 euros for 2) came cold (our son shared it with us so it was nevertheless quite copious). Desserts were way too complicated.
The crowd was composed of Bras's worshipers, wearing glasses and fleece -it is cold up there-. They all seemed very serious and bored.
The only relief was the breakfast : it was delicious at last ! and we knew we would leave in a few minutes.
