“Biggest disappointment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012

My husband and I were really looking forward to eating (and staying) there, and drove five hours to reach the only remaining top gastro restaurant we had yet to go to in France. After settling in our suite (architect had probably good ideas but why are all lights hallogen white ? carpeting in small squares, cheap finitions...) we were quickly brought to the bar by the pretentious Maitre D who handed us over to young unexperienced trainees. They advised us on drinks we did not touch : limonade with sureau for our son and wine with reglisse both undrinkable. Nobody asked us to replace the drinks with better choices. - the wine by the glass selection is extremely poor : macon des heritiers du comte de lafont not up to such a level-
We read with delight the cute story about Michel Bras stealing the eggs of the neighbour's farm which explained why the oeuf a la coque was his madeleine de proust. But to our dismay, we noticed that the eggs were marked with industrial numbers.
When the Maitre D finally condescended to come back to take our order, he had no proposal to make for our son. When I asked him if 'tarte aux cebes' was a mushroom tart, he scornfully replied they were onions.
When the bar was completely deserted, we decided to walk to our dinner table and had to ask 4 times for the sommelier to come.
We were presented with the Laguiole knife with 'ce couteau is going to accompany your meal' with solemnity and we had to beg after each of the 3 courses that it is changed with the other cutlery.
The omble chevalier was mixed with sweet aubergine, a strange combination. The foie gras was merelyacceptable especially if we compare it with what we tasted in Dordogne the following night.
The cote de boeuf (130 euros for 2) came cold (our son shared it with us so it was nevertheless quite copious). Desserts were way too complicated.
The crowd was composed of Bras's worshipers, wearing glasses and fleece -it is cold up there-. They all seemed very serious and bored.
The only relief was the breakfast : it was delicious at last ! and we knew we would leave in a few minutes.

“A superb experience! One of the very best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2012

We had lunch at this very professionally-run dining establishment with a long history of accolades from the critics. It did not disappoint at any one point... my wife swooned at the crab-like texture of the turbot from the menu Balade. She would have probably begged for seconds if she could squeeze any more in her tiny tummy. Naturally, we had to save some space for dessert and by george, was it a tour-de-force! The coulant de chocolat has not been raved about enough and we'll certainly not be the last to sing its praises. The fromage of the region hit the right notes and the wine list was very comprehensive. If you like fresh herbs and greens, Bras does it deftly and with natural flair.... like a floral garden served before you with all the right garnishings. Each dish was a feast for the eyes and the palate. We've been to the best in spain, NYC and Norway, this institution may be old and long standing but there's a clear reason why they've stayed at the top for so long.... reinvention; they do it like maestros!

“Superb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2012

The choice of two set meals, a vegetarian set meal or a la carte provide a great way to enjoy food. The aperitif made from an orange peel zest was delightful, and served with a fantastic mushroom taste. Our meal was a combination of a set meal and a la carte and could not be faulted.

“A truely superb restaurant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

This restaurant was a superb experience in every respect. Wonderful setting, brilliant food, excellent staff, excellent wine list. We were even taken into the kitchen after dinner to meet the chef, Sebastian Bras, and shown how it all works. We cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. We have had no better dining experience.

“Very very nice but not excellent!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

We recently had dinner here and also stayed overnight. It is tricky to find as its quite secluded but visible from the road as you approach. The staff on arrival were pleasant if not a little brusque! The accomodation is very new and very modern - 'minimilastic' is probably the correct word. However for us, the suite lacked character and warmth despite having everything and more that one would need.

Dinner was enjoyable but not quite to our expectations. Pre-dinner drinks were offered although because of a large group we did feel as though we had been shoved around the corner out of sight. The entree was magnificent - a sald of asparagus with morsels of mushrooms etc. - the main course of lamb was the best we had ever tasted. However the sides and dessert were not memorable.

Overall it was worth making the visit if not for any other reason but to compare other wonderful dishes at other wonderful restaurants and just marvel at French cooking!
