We travelled from bordeaux to the lake, it took 3 hrs by car. There are water falls along the route to the lac. There is car park at the front of the ticket office which is 5 euros or free if you get a family pass for pic midi and Lac (cost 112-120 Euro). The lady at the ticket counter spoke english and very friendly and forthcoming . You can hike to the lake or take a cable car followed by a chair lift to the top(obviously included in the price) and then a walk to the lake on flat dirt track( about 15 -20 minutes). The Views simply spectacular, serene and breathtaking, well worth the effort. There is restaurant adjacent to the lake serving sandwiches and hot food, Not vegetarian friendly, but the french fries and fresh cheese baguette was not in bad taste. The owner of the restaurant spoke english. Definite place to see and place to do fly fishing ( Brown trout and Rainbow trout)

It is a very nice and easy walk to the lake even from the car park. For those less willing there is the lift to assist. However you go it's well worth the trip. The most blue water I've seen.

If you go to cauterets, you should not miss a trip to the lac de gaube, drive to the pont d'espagne car park 5 euro for the day,Hyke or take the cable car to the ski lift.
Pop on the ski lift taking you up to the top(15,20 minutes journey) and after walk for 15 minutes to the most stunning place in the Hautes Pyrenees the Lac De Gaube.

Beautiful walk up from Pont d'Espagne to a lake with the view of a glacier. Very cold water in the lake.

Take the chair lift to the top, then an easy walk to the lac de Gaube. Beautiful blue water, freezing cold though, and free mountain mineral water at the brasserie. We decided to walk back to the carpark via the track, again reasonnably easy (just a couple of big steps). If you buy the ticket for the lake and Pont d'Espagne, the fee includes the parking fee.
