I had to make a trip to Kudus in Central Java recently and was rather perturbed by the lack of information in most tourist guides and the complete absence of any details on Tripadvisor. Other than a passing mention of Kudus being home to Indonesia's Kretek Museum, it was as though the town never existed!

I'm now hoping to fill this void by posting a review of the Hotel Griptha in Kudus, a wonderful hotel in the middle of a charming town devoid of -- well -- anything, really. I can't imagine why anyone would want or need to come to Kudus, least of all tourists, but if you do I'd recommend this hotel. Rooms are decently priced, though this is a higher-end hotel for Kudus -- smaller hotels are available in abundance and are probably enormously cheaper. The rooms are clean and well maintained; my 'Deluxe' air-conditioned room had a comfortable double bed, a sofa, and a seating area with two chairs. I also had a long desk and a flat-screen television. My only problems were the lack of hairdryer, though I'm sure one would be available at reception if I'd asked, and the fact that the shower produced tepid rather than hot water. After waking up in a frigid room (I'd left the air-con on too low, all night) hot water would have been a blessing! The restaurant also had a very limited selection, unless you're into Central Javanese food -- if you like goat curry etc. you're in for a treat!

Surprisingly, the hotel had wireless internet throughout, even in the rooms. This was reasonably high-speed, too. The hotspot in my room wasn't working but the one in the lobby was fine, as were those elsewhere in the hotel. The staff also made an enormous effort to try and fix the hotspot, clambouring around on stepladders and with all sorts of tools and implements to try and revive the access point. All staff were always exceptionally nice and attentive and they even gave me a lift across town to my meeting and offered to pick me up again afterwards.

Kudus is easily accessed by taxi from Semarang and costs a flat-rate of 200,000 IDR, payable pre-departure at the taxi desk in the airport. Reservations at the Hotel Griptha are best made by phone, as nobody responded to my e-mail reservation request. That said, some staff speak passable English and will certainly do their best to help.
