“Lovely home and wonderful hosts”
Reviewed October 11, 2017 for a stay in September 2017

Our lovely hosts Dawn and Paul had the fire going for us on our arrival. Such a wonderful surprise as it was quite a cool evening (for us Aussies) at that altitude. Everything about the property was as described in the listing and more.
Dawn and Paul went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. We only wish we had more time to spend there and to continue exploring this area of Alsace.
Thank you Dawn and Paul for your hospitality

“Very peaceful and ideal for pets and getting outdoors, especially cycling!”
Reviewed October 8, 2017 for a stay in October 2017

We spent a very enjoyable 4 days at Le Cerf. Paul and Dawn are very welcoming and engage as much or as little as you would like them to with local advice, support or whatever you may need. Very professional and friendly hosts. The property has a fantastic view and the location is very peaceful with plenty to do in the local area. We holidayed with our two medium size dogs we found the chalet was very pet friendly with some amazing walks from the front door. Local amenities are a 10 mins drive away – supermarkets and boulangerie - and we cooked at home every night. If you like cycling this is also a perfect base location on or off road.

“Absolutely fantastic holiday property in a sublime location”
Reviewed August 24, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

If like me, you always do a lot of research on review sites etc before booking accommodation, please let me save you the trouble.
Le Cerf is a great place to stay - fullstop.
The location is high up in the Vosges mountains with lovely views and has the best walks from the doorstep that we have ever come across in a holiday rental. Just walk up the lane and within 2 minutes you are in the most beautiful forest on paths or on wide forest tracks.
Further afield (and you need a car) are the most well preserved villages and towns in France, we went to Kayersberg, Equisheim and Colmar - all worth a visit.
The area is also great for cycling - we drove about 50 minutes to a Voie Verte (no cars) which is an old railway and tarmaced now for cycles. Lovely long cycles rides though fab french countryside on virtually flat routes. We also went and cycled the nearby Epinal canal path - really lovely and quiet.
Also visited the local lakes on lots of occasions for swimming, fishing and boat hire.
But what made the holiday for us was the warm and genuine welcome by the owners Dawn and Paul who live next door. Nothing was too much trouble and they have a wealth of information on where to go, what to do and when to do it. Dawn even came to the vets with us to make sure that the vet stamped our dog's passport ok.
Dawn was also really helpful before the holiday with tips on where to stop overnight en route, best route to drive from Dover etc - she really is a diamond.
Dawn will also cook for you - we had a marvelous meal on our first night and a super cake on arrival too!
There are laminated local walks in the house which we used - try the Honneck walk route 12 - a long one but well worth it with the most amazing views from the top of the mountain.
The Mirabelle Tower walk (route 7) is also good with views of the lake at Gerardmer from the top of the tower.
If you are not scared of heights, try the Valtin Rocks walk (just down from the house route 8).
The house itself is perfect for a family with 3 good sized bedrooms and a decent woodburner with lots of free logs.
There are lots of places to eat nearby but we were so busy that we didn't get a chance to try!
For self catering, there are 3 large supermarkets in Gerardmer (about 15 mins by car) and a very good market on Thursday and Saturday mornings.
Although we visited in high summer, we understand that the skiing is pretty good in the winter months too.
All in all, we had a really action packed holiday in an area that we did not know but would recommend the area and this rental to anyone without hesitation.

“Lovely location, warm welcome.”
Reviewed November 18, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

Our first visit to Alsace. For us a lovely mountain location with walks up into the mountains and forest right out the door.

The owners live next door and we enjoyed our warming casserole on arrival. Bit tricky finding the place as we did not know what a 'marie' is and assumed this marie thing would have a sign indicating it was indeed a marie!

Comfy, cosy accommodation, hygienic if a little dusty here n there.
Kids loved the owners energetic dogs.
Wood burner heats the whole living area very well.
Under floor accommodation a bit unwelcoming and very cold, especially the bathrooms with freezing cold tiled floors and non wooden walls.

Great views.
We cooked most evening as we enjoy getting our own stocks from local supermarkets and stores. Things like rabbit with baby onions in wine made from scratch.

We went during halve term and caught a few days snow which was great for tobogganing in the village and elsewhere - great speed if you lay face down and do a fast run up push off yourself.

A small wooden farm auberge at the bottom of the village ski area served amazing and cheap food - the French couple owners are incredibly friendly and fun. It's like being invited into someones home.

We recommend these auberges. A nice restaurant in the next settlement - I think called Le Valtin - the owners of the rental property recommended it. Amazing meats grilled against an open fire in front of you.

Beautiful forest all over the place.
Nearest local town 'Gerardmer' a bit bland and could be anywhere with its large warehousing etc. Munster is a lot nicer and has quaint shops and eateries.

Drove to spa town in Germany recommended by the owners - was warm and sunny and a good experience but a bit like the film Cocoon - lots of oldies everywhere.

Drove to Mulhouse zoo, worth the effort but could find nothing to eat or drink anywhere on the main roads, so we went into a large place opposite zoo to find ourselves amongst lots of oldies and ompha music, but could not get to the bar as it was rammed. Take a packed lunch to the zoo.

Anyway we had a great time and very restful stay. Maybe next time we'd go later in year as it did become a bit grey and slushy some days. Skiing seemed reasonable but we imagined it gets very packed and chaotic as it's relatively close to a lot of large towns and cities and closer to them than the alps.

Thanks to the owners for a lovely stay.
