Owner description: The pontifical Carthusian monastery of the Val-de-Bénédiction was founded in the 14th century by Pope Innocent VI. The frescoes of the Saint John Baptist's Chapel were painted by Matteo Giovanetti, who created the frescoes in Avignon Palace. The three cloisters, surrounded by forty cells and gardens, made it one of the largest Carthusian monstery in France.

“Enjoyable afternoon.”

We spent a very pleasant afternoon exploring this place...the gardens were pretty, the restoration work very good and while not a high priority we had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

“Good perspective on a Monk's life”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013

This is an affordable and excellent attraction. The tour allows you to get a very good idea of how the monks would have lived. It is really informative.

“Juxtaposing history and modern art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

The Chartreuse Abbey is a well preserved complex of monks' quarters, cloister, and work areas located in the middle of Villeneuve lez Avignon. I last visited just this March, and was pleased to note extensive additions (in Englsh) to the educational aspects of the abbey since our last visit in 2007.

Chartreuse is also a center for working artists, some of whom are on sabbaticals and living in (refurbished!) monks' cells. Where small windows next to their doors once received meager meals, now there are small works of modern art to various themes. Chartreuse has also installed and upgraded a theater in its chapel; to my mind, this is a perfect use for the space.

Simply walking about the grounds and through the buildings gives a real sense of what it must have been like to live as a monk centuries ago. But the energy of the current art displays and programs makes this abbey a cut above in regards to contemporary relevance. Try to time your visit with a performance if you can!

“Worth the trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012

The monastery is an amazing place and because it is still quite whole (unlike most UK monastic ruins) it is incredibly evocative of the way of life that was carried on there for hundreds of years. It was a solitary but quite comfortable life for the monks and would fascinate anyone who has any interest in monastic life but has never seen a Carthusian establishment. This was a particularly rich establishment being founded by a Pope.

Amazing, deserve to be discover. The little cafe as the owners of my B&B told me about offered a very nice lunch for a very good price. I am a food lover can't stop to speak about food.
