Viewed from the outside, the Hotel de la Plage blends in perfectly with the quirky architecture of La Grande-Motte, which is a mix of triangular high-rise apartment blocks set back in the town centre and more curvaceous low-rise beach-front properties.

It is located at the far end of the beach, right next to the inlet that separates La Grande-Motte with the neighbouring seaside commune of Le Grau du Roi. All rooms overlook the beach, which is just metres from the grounds of the hotel, and from the start of the summer season is sectioned off as a private beach accessible only to hotel residents.

The welcome on arrival was very warm, especially from Riri, the hotel's affectionate cat, which was rather soothing after a frustrating six-hour drive. The interior of the hotel is thoughtfully decorated with some nice touches that spruce up what could otherwise be a fairly bland interior. There is a small bar with a small games room (one pool table) next to it and then the restaurant, which we did not try unfortunately, nor did we sample the €16 breakfast. For comparison, for under €20 I had a full Sunday brunch in the town that comprised fresh fruit juice, two hot drinks, a chicken fillet, bacon, boiled eggs, smoked salmon, pancake, a choice of patisserie, a choice of fresh fruit and a generous baguette with a choice of jam.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, with a small balcony overlooking the sea, wall-mounted flat-screen TV and a mini-bar (drinks only). There was free wireless internet but the connection was quite sporadic and seemed more difficult to catch with an iPad than with an iPhone. Our room had individual air conditioning, although we didn't really need it. I notice another reviewer complained about not being able to plug the hairdryer in - I had the same problem until my wife simply flipped open a flap on the strip light and, hey presto, there was a socket.

On the ground floor, there is a separate spa area (accessed with the same electronic badge that is used to open the hotel door after 11pm and the barrier for the car park) with an enclosed hot tub, a small steam bath and an even smaller sauna, which would be crowded with more than two people in it. Nevertheless, the spa area was tastefully designed and cleaned.

We travelled by car and, with the hotel being located at the edge of town, this was quite convenient for us. The car park is usually secured by a barrier, so that you can only get in or out with a badge (or if someone inside the hotel operates the barrier for you). But you could quite easily leave the car for the duration of your stay and hop on one of the bikes available for hire from the hotel (or even hire a Segway in town, for which the French "giropode" might prove useful).

The hotel also provided us with a small leaflet of sights worth seeing in the region. It looked like they had produced this themselves, which was thoughtful, since there is a lot to see in the region besides the sea (such as the Camargue nature reserve and the Pont du Gard).

This was our second time in the region and we have enjoyed both stays, mainly because of the excellent choice of food and the fresh seafood available at reasonable prices from most restaurants.

Stayed in this hotel for one night. The rooms were nicely refurbished probably about 4-5 years ago. Nice room overlooking the ocean. The only negatives were the bath didn't have a place to hand the hand shower so we were forced to have bath (ie no shower) and the hairdryer was permanently connected to the wall but the plug to plug it in couldn't reach any power socket in sight so it was un-usable....derrrr.

Room Tip: Choisir le dernier étage. Plus cher mais au top.
