Camping Club Mar Estang
Reviewed July 15, 2013

We visited Camping Mar Estang in late June to July 2013. We travelled with 15, 11 and 6 year olds. We have travelled to France a number of times and without doubt this was the best site we have stayed in. There is a full itinerary all day for everybody - aqua aerobics, step aerobics, zumba classes, football tournaments, tennis, art classes etc (everyday bar Saturday). The pitches are close together, some not as good as others. We stayed with Vacances Soleil in a tent which was fine - bit of a sting on arrival with local taxes and bands for site amenities costing 102 for the 5 of us which we hadn't been warned about. But we didn't let it take from a great experience. The majority of staff have great English, the entertainment by night is excellent, something for all to enjoy. The onsite shop lady has poor manners but other than that all staff are super and make everybody feel welcome and included in all activities! The pool is excellent if a little cold - there are two heated pools but they aren't on the same side as the shoots & slides. Be warned, they are very strict about not being allowed to wear burmudas - we witnessed a couple of males being asked to leave the pool (not the pool area though, which is ok if you just wanna sunbathe). The onsite shop is dear and a little walk up the promenade will bring you to Utile, much more reasonable. Lidl in St. Cyprien is 10 mins in a car and worth a visit to save a few euros. Key Largo across the road via the underpass is brilliant. Excellent staff. The bar on site is excellent, staff have great English and the beer is reasonably priced - happy hour every day from 6-7 is a must! Overall this site deserves all of its stars and will be somewhere we will return. Notes for you if staying in pitches - bring your own toilet paper as none provided in public toilets!

We travelled as a family of 2 adults and 3 children. And stayed in a Thomson Al Fresco mobile home.

We flew into Perpignan, which was only about a 20 minute taxi ride. The reception area/staff really nice and welcoming. However, we actually didn't need to go into the main reception but go straight to the Thomson reception, where the mobilehomes are located. These are really easy to find as there is a large flag with Al Fresco on it! Turn left entering the site, go past the bar, pool complex, tennis courts until you reach the Djerba shower block. Where on the left is Allee 3,leading to Allee 4. You should be able to see the flag!

Geoff the rep was there to welcome us and took us to the home, and we loved the welcome pack-especially the juice for the kids in the fridge and the beer! Nice welcome!!
The AlFresco reception has a good selection of toys and books. The toys were very useful and the adult books too. There is also buckets and spades! And all free to use!
Having a rep living on-site really good if you want to know anything-Geoff really friendly and willing to help!

The homes are set in the most peacefull spot! And decking has the full sun from around 10am until sunset! And each home has an awning over part of the decking. There are plenty of seats for everyone to sit outside.
As we went for 10 days we decided to use the washing machines on-site. At €5/€6 to use the washing machine and tumble drier(each) we decided to dry our towels on our clothes airer outside our home. If you decide to do this too take more pegs! Washing machines already have washpowder in so no need to take your own.
Mobilehomes have all you could need including 3 adapters-really handy.

The weather in May was a mixture. Some days were cloudless blue sunny skies. And others were wet! But all the time there is a wind blowing, so remember to pack warm clothes!

The pool areas were really clean and at this time of the year you had plenty of sunbeds to choose from and places to shelter from the wind. Our children often complained they were cold after getting out of the pool, and had to go back to the home. However, this was also good because it was actually warmer outside the homes than the pools!
The lagoon pool was cold, the heated one didn't seem much warmer. And all pools were saltwater.
The bridge linking the pools together was also really rough on your feet, as you aren't allowed shoes in the pool complex.

We would fully recommend using the Utile supermarket on the promenade about a 15/20 minute walk away. Half the price of the shop on-site! Loads of choice, and wine on-tap at €1.69 a litre. We also bought burgers and catalan sausage for the bbq! Really nice!
While the kids were in mini-club we would walk to the shop!

We also recommend having a trip on the land train to get your bearings. This was about €3 each and picks up outside the park gates.

Room Tip: Thomson Al Fresco in a quiet area away from the main road.

We got a cancellation with Tompson Al Fresco for 10-21 August 2012. Flew into Perpignan with Ryanair and a taxi from there for around 40Euros. All very easy.
Mobile home was a good size (we booked a three bedroom for four of us) absolutely spotless and everything was there as promised and all working. (We believe these were some of the best mobile homes on site - lucky us.) Rep Ricky and his wife were great - unobtrusive, but always there if you needed anything.
The site iteself is large and busy with lots of facilities. Very clean and generally well manintained, but some areas showed that they were well used. The toilet and shower blocks were clean and well maintained. The only thing we did find below standard was the toilet for use at the swimming pool - this needed a complete refurbishment and was dirty too. Most odd and out of sync with the rest of the site.
We found the shops very well stocked - OK a little more expensive than the supermarkets in town, but not outrageously so - we chose to have no car and could have found everything we wanted on site. The bakery is to die for!
The takeaway was efficient and fine - we very much enjoyed the rotisserie chicken - cheap too.
We didn't use the bar or restaurant on site - just not our scene. We often walked into town to use the many restaurants there - they were OK or better - only one bad experience and that was the waffle shop - service was sooooooo slow.
Although this is a big and busy site it is well designed and 'swallows' people. Yes, it does get busy and noisy around the pool, bars, petanque pitch, but was quiet around our mobile home.
One little tip - don't leave your shoes on the shelves as you go into the pool, pop them in your bag. Our sons flip flops disappeared - not a big thing, but annoying as they are so useful on holiday.

Room Tip: We used Tompson Al Fresco and their mobile homes appeared to be the best (newest?) on site in 2012.

The Summers famiy all love Camping Mar Estang and don't understand the bad reviews it sometimes gets. Our first visit was in 2009 with friends and their kids and we have returned ever since and are already booked for 2013 again for 3 weeks. The Keycamp vans have all we need and John and Diane are very helpful and we look forward to meeting them again next year. The best part of all is the closeness to the beach which is beautiful and not very busy. The walk along the front to the town is lovely. We like that there are so many different nationalities there. The site does get busy with the clubs that camp there but we have never had any problem with noise. There is plenty to do on site if you want and my daughter usually goes along to pottery with her dad! My son made great use of the gym ad his dad went on the morning cycles. However we are all happy to chill out and read and relax by the pool or on the beach. My son who will be 18 by next summer will join us a week in after holidaying with friends this is because he too enjoys it and not because he just wants a second holiday!!! Roll on Summer 2013

Found this place by accident as we were driving past. We had a flat in Canet-Plage but were struggling to find a pool for the kids and the Europa pool had a water polo toournament on. This place was a Godsend...absolute Gold-dust: We drove there every day, we were not camping, Wondefully efficient, friendly and helpful reception staff, four lifeguards always on duty at the pool complex and how good was that, with the waterslides for the kids. Tennis courts and other games stuff to do, BBQs etc. Never a problem finding sun loungers but it was at the end of the season. Poo lcloses at 1800. Happy hour at the bar starts then...two large beers for 4 Euros! Enetrtainment in the evening not bad...how funny were the karaoke singers!! Good fun, very clean, polite and friendly staff and well organised. Mixture of nationalities, Dutch, Belgians, French, Norwegians......and us!
Supermarket and fast food outlets on site. Wouldn't rate them above average but they were OK. Would imagine it to be a great place for teenagers around the age of 13-17. I would definitley go back and rent a mobile home on site.

Stayed Thompson alfresco. Outstanding accommodation with excellent reps Ricky and his wife. Had the pleasure of flamingos greeting us each morning. Pool area pleasant and staff helpful; however toilets could have been cleaner!

Thanks for nothing. On a charity road trip down to Gibraltar we telephoned ahead and booked 3 caravans and 3 pitches for tents. The first car arrived and was kept waiting with no keys etc by security for 1 1/2 hrs before they would even allow them in! Once they got in, the bar shut 5 mins later. The next arrivals were not even expected and there was no caravans for us so three cars had to drive around the town looking for hotels that were all full. Eventually finding a hotel in St Cyprien (miles away) and paying the earth. The three tents were directed to an area that was virtually impossible to drive tent pegs in! The atitude of the security guards was dreadful and not only unhelpful but also rude and because they didnt at first know I speak frence was full of swearing and derogatory comments. A number of years ago I worked on this site as security and know very well how to deal with people and how to resolve customer concerns etc. unfortunatly, they certainly didnt!!
When we came to check out the next morning the atitude of the reception staff was more of the same even though they said they were aware of "concerns and issues" with their security!
As this was a charity event we were obviously trying to keep costs to a minimum and their atitude and behaviour regarding the caravans cost us quite a lot of money we neednt have spent on hotels.
Thanks for nothing.
