“Don't Make Me Stay Here Again!”
Reviewed June 25, 2007

We were happily booked in at Chateau D'Augerville about 30 minutes away. Upon arrival we were told that they would not be able to accommodate us on one of the nights as they had a wedding and needed or rooms, however we were booked in at the Bas-Breau which was very similar.

We arrived at the Bas-Breau after a long day out, we were expecting lovely chateau, as we approached by car we were met with what looked like a dated pub.

The rooms were terrible, ok maybe clean but very small, very dated indeed, not pleasant after coming from the Chateau D'Augerville (truly excellent) ... but both were rated **** which shocked me.

We had to eat, it was late and my chum needed food, after I looked at the reastaurant menu and saw the prices I was all for leaving. 50+ euros for a main course was silly - the quality of the food did not justify the prices either.

I am not a cheap date but I appreciate value and good food, this delivered neither.

I would not stay here and I would not reccommend this place to anyone. Had I booked it I would have found somewhere else immediately, I would not have stayed the night never mind a week.

No way!

Stayed in the Bas-Breau for 3 nights in late April 2006. Selected this hotel because there were no rooms available in Fontainebleau. We were a group of 7 on business. Room rates start around 245E and go to 400+ depending on room/suite.

The hotel is spread out over several buildings all looking to be 17th or 18th C. There is a courtyard behind for parking. There is a beautiful pool (unusual for the area). The main lobby is off a gated cobbled courtyard that opens to the main street. The rooms are well furnished and of particular note the bathrooms are large and with very up to date (appeared nearly new) fittings. There was a jacuzzi bath with impulse shower (the kind where there are hoizontal jets as well as a shower head). Very impressive. Free wifi in every room so you can connect easily. Espresso maker in every room. Cable tv but limited channels.

The manageress attempted to get us to eat in the hotel but we preferred to walk down the quaint main street. Barbizon is a very luxe village with art shops and realtors. Window shopping for property there was not much under 750,000E and most properties 1mE and up. We ate at Les Charmettes and recommend it highly. Again not cheap (for 7 people with plenty of wine bill was 450E) but superb quality.

Barbizon is really a tourist destination and I wouldnt recommend the hotel for business travel unless you have plenty of time. Our request for breakfast at 0730 was agreed to but the next morning they just weren't ready. We waited till 0755 at which point they were ready, but we had to leave. They were very apologetic and next morning they had it together, on time! But clearly this was too early for their normal routine. We had long days and often didn't return till 11 or midnight at which time there really was nobody around. On checkout day we had to be up at 0530 and drive off at 0600. This meant we had to checkout the night before because there's nobody at reception till 0700.

I would recommend this hotel for a romantic getaway. Very charming and attractive, just not geared to business people.

Very friendly, attentive service.

We stayed for two nights in a room on the first floor, overlooking the entrance courtyard.

The room was a reasonable size, with sloping ceilings and old furniture, but modern air-conditionaing. Unusually, the hanging cupboard space opened off the bathroom.

Overall, the room was over-priced and we thought the restaurant prices exhorbitant - particularly as there is a very good restaurant just down the road.

We would not stay here again.

Stayed in Barbizon in May 2004. Close to Paris, Barbizon is obviously a frequent choice for week-end getaways and the Bas-Breau definitely knows how to accomodate its guests.

Our room was a nice, large, well furnished room with a great jacuzzi in the bathroom.

Tennis courts next door, plus swimming pool (which we did not try as it was too cold).

Excellent restaurant, with efficient and courteous service.

A tad expensive, but the premium room and food deserve it.

Enjoy your stay there !
