We fancied a short break on the Norfolk coast bank holiday weekend and left it a bit late to book,so we paid slightly more than we'd normally spend to stay at the Pheasant. Lovely looking hotel in beautifully kept grounds, great first impression. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable,no complaints there, and the breakfast was spot on,cereal and pain au chocolat followed by a fry up,just the job! The bar area also looked very appealing, but as the wife is pregnant we steered clear. Our main aim was to do a bit of walking and follow some local trails, but this was the one letdown of our stay. The staff didn't have a clue about anywhere local to walk or go,surely a requirement of front deskers? There must have been 5 people milling about and none of them had any idea or looked as if they gave a damn. We found our own way in the end, drove to the next village Weybourne and strolled along cliff tops towards Sheringham, very nice too. The staff at breakfast consisted of one hard working girl,a young lad trying to organise things and another young girl who looked like she was sucking a lemon,so miserable it was embarrassing. Whoever is running the show needs to shake the staff up or they will lose custom, which would be a shame as everything else is of high standard.

We visited the hotel on Saturday 27th July for afternoon tea which had been booked. As it was my birthday treat we were hoping for something special and we weren't disappointed. From the wonderful vintage looking crockery to the mouthwatering display of food which tasted as good as it looked, it was a wonderful experience not to be missed.

If you get a chance to indulge before the summer is over then don't hesitate; book now! We sat in the lovely remodelled gardens in the late afternoon sun and just soaked up the peace and tranquility. The other guests there that day also seemed to be enjoying the same or a variation of the tea that is on offer; there is more than one choice. With unlimited tea in huge tea pot and enough food to make you feel comfortably full this is excellent value for money.

We will definitely be returning, even as the summer ends. I am hoping there will be an autumn/ winter version for us to enjoy another time.

I cannot comment on the hotel rooms as we were not booked in to stay.

We chose the Pheasant with no prior knowledge of what it was like. The hotel is located on the Kelling Estate just outside Holt in Norfolk in a quiet rural setting. Now owned by Kelling Estate the building has been extensively refurbished and extended and it is obvious a great deal of money has been spent on it. The public rooms are tastefully furnished and there is an attractive terrace outside the dining room complete with up-market garden furniture, parasols etc. Our bedroom was on the ground floor in a wing overlooking the garden at the back of the hotel and was extremely comfortable with a 6 ft bed, large flat screen TV and good quality furniture. The bathroom was 'state of the art' modern with a digitally operated shower etc. although I found the bath rather difficult to get in and out of when using the shower. Found the dining room experience slightly disappointing because the service was not as good as it could have been. I think this was mainly due to a young and inexperienced staff. The piano player was too loud and intrusive. However, the food was mainly good. It was unfortunate that our visit coincided with a large family party which made we guests feel somewhat besieged as the party more or less took over the whole place. It might have been better to have closed the hotel that weekend to outside visitors! Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay and would book again. The Pheasant is conveniently situated for travelling to most major tourist locations in the area.

We were a party of five and one of our number had specific dietary requirements. Nothing was too much trouble and the chef produced a fabulous special meal for them and the rest of us ate from the meal. Everyone of us made a different choice and each meal was delicious. Special thanks go to Nicole from the waitstaff, she was exceptional and truly made our evening. We will be back

This was my first visit to The Pheasant hotel. We'd driven past many times and seen that it was being refurbished, so were happy to accept an invitation to lunch there from a friend. What a beautiful place it is, everything is so well appointed. We had the most delicious lunch and servings were generous. The puddings were a bit on the small size. Our waiter was a young man called James and he was excellent - he'll go far! The bits of the hotel that we saw (the garden, the bar and lounge and toilets) were very impressive. Will certainly go back.

We have just had a very pleasant stay at The Pheasant hotel. Everything was spotlesly clean. Our room was lovely and bright, all newly furnished and well appointed. Be aware that the standard double we had booked had two single beds put together - mind the gap! However the beds were amazingly comfortable and had cotton bed linen.
The breakfast was excellent and served by efficient and cheerful young staff who were well mananged. We took advantage of the location and walked to the coast from the hotel. This hotel seems to do just about everything right. It is the best stay we have had in a British hotel

There are a number of administrative and service issues with the hotel which when addressed would make this an outstanding place to stay.
On the admistrative side we were overcharged by £10 per night for the 6 night stay. The issue has now been resolved but it has taken a month of correspondence before they accepted that they had made a mistake. Secondly we were not made aware of a £25 allowance per person for evening meals when staying on a D. B&B basis. It was only after our second evening meal that we learnt of the allowance. Please ensure you are told on arrival how it works. The allowance is actually very good value. Thirdly we were only asked on our final evening meal to sign for extras (wine etc.). This should have happened every evening but for some reason didn't. I am sure the billing was accurate but it would have been nice to have verified it on a daily basis.
On the service side the issues relate specifically to the restaurant. There are too many to relate in detail but do not expect to be served in the order you arrive at your table and expect varying wait times between courses, some unacceptably long.
Having said that there are many positive aspects about the hotel. We last stayed 4 years ago and since then the hotel has new owners who have invested significantly in the hotel. Our room was extremely comfortable with first class fitments and fittings. The restaurant food was of an execellent quality with a good choice on both the special and a la carte menus. All the staff were very sociable and helpful.
Overall I would recommend the hotel for those wanting a relaxing break in very pleasant surroundings. I trust they will get their act together in the near future in which case I would up my rating to excellent.
