We had treid to book the usual Reims and Troyes on the way home, but had no luck. so decided to run out to St Dizier, the journey there was enjoyable. The hotel is outside a market square and car park, but the town is very pleasant. The hotel has been newly refurbished, overall the best so far, as we often travell from UK to Valencia spain, i would recomend.

We wanted an overnight stop in February near the Lac du Der-Chantecoq and Colombey-les-deux-eglises and St Dizier was very convenient. We hadn't stayed in an All Seasons before, although had used Mercure several times.
The hotel was very functional - it had all one needed and no more. However at 79 euros for a room and two breakfasts it was very good value. The room was not large, but the bed was big and comfortable (though the pillows were thin.) Breakfast was better than we expected - fresh bread, croissants, etc.
There is a car park immediately behind the hotel - not large but plenty of space in February (and there is a very large car park across the road.)
St Dizier itself is not exciting - a few cafes in the centre. I wouldn't stay here long, but overnight was fine (and the birdwatching at the Lac and the De Gaulle memorial are both recommended.).

We have chosen the hotel because of the promotion, pay one night get one free, and we have never been in the Champagne area. I would say the full price is a bit pricey for a small town hotel, but we have seen only one other hotel while walking around, and that one was looking rather shabby – so you might not have much choice.
The first impression of the family room was quite positive: spacious and with a nice design. However, one neon light stopped working seconds after we turned it on. The room has two separate toilets: one with a totally unpractical position next to the entrance door – with just a wc (not even a sink!) and another one in the living area (also without a sink) – and this one was not flushing! Probably the idea was to have a very "design" setting, but given the space a proper bathroom would have been more practical, instead of having pieces of it spread all over the room… Apart from that, the double bed was comfortable, the reading lights just right and the extendable sofa was easy to extend. The TV could be turned around so you could either watch from the bed or from the sofa in the living area. The Disney channel is a great plus if travelling with kids.
Parking is very small, in the back yard (you could fit only 6 to 8 cars), but somehow was never full.
Breakfast was very French (croissants, fresh orange juice – you could do it yourself!, some fruits, coffee and hot chocolate). We had takeout from La Mie Caline (on the same street, going in the direction of the centre) and picnicked in the little park behind the City Hall – a hidden gem I would say.
The city in itself is not much, but we have appreciated the Saturday morning market, just in front of the hotel (we have bought cherries and raspberries) and we have also done a 2-3 hours walking tour around the town, by the river Marne and the canal between Champagne and Bourgogne. All the information about walks in and around the city is on the website of the city (in French). We also went to Lac du Der and visited the museum of the lake – a sort of village museum. We were very impressed to discover this was an artificial lake and three villages were destroyed to build it. It a very small open-air museum and is worth a visit during summer time, especially with small kids – our daughter loved it!
