We dined here during an overnight stay in Mâcon on a drive from Provence to the UK in August and I wanted to return to Le Lamartine, which I had visited on a previous trip and been very impressed with. The meal was exceptional.
You need to book or get there early in the evening to enjoy dinner on the terrace. We hadn't booked, so we were offered a table for two in the sun porch, between the terrace and the restaurant inside, and this was a very pleasant space. Our table still had a fine view of the river.
Both of us started with the Soupe de Poisson, with the usual trimmings, which was a delight; in fact, we agreed one of the best either of us had tasted (among many!). My partner then went for Moules Marinières, as she often does, whilst I went for the regional classic, Bouef Bourguignon. The mussels were spot-on, and accompanied by chips which were, apparently, "superb" (for my partner to take an interest in chips, something special needs to be happening!). The stew was delicious - perfectly prepared with a lovely sauce and all the ingredients combined to perfection. Served in the ubiquitous pot and lid and enough to feed 3 people...
The food was more than matched by the wine. We shared a bottle of Pouilly Fuissé (Domaine Gilles Noblet Prestige, 2010, from just down the road), which was superb, if a little pricey, and a fine half bottle of Crozes-Hermitage (E Guigal), from the northern Rhône. We didn't have room for dessert or cheese, so settled for excellent coffees and a regional Marc de Borgougne (a pomace brandy).
Service throughout was professional, courteous and attentive. A very memorable experience.
There are many good restaurants in Mâcon and on its "autre rive", Saint Laurent-sur-Saône. We checked out this sun-kissed opposite side of the river on a pre-dinner stroll, and there are a number of attractive looking bars and restaurants there for those that like their evening sun.
Le Lamartine deserves its top ten ranking. In a two week visit to France it provided the best "classic" French food experience. Excellent.

we had looked at various places along the river side before selling on this truly traditional old building. a warm welcome was straight away an improvement on the other restaurants along this road and the food certainly didn't disappoint either. my wife had the plat du jour which was a very tasty beef rib with veg, preceded by goats cheese salad and a pear tart for dessert and all under 15 euro. I just had a beef pave cooked to perfection. a better meal you couldn't wish for. the staff were very atentative without being over powering and we well be back again before we leave . all this in a very olde worlde building sympathetically decorated. highly recommended

Very tasty food. Good value. Filled with locals. Deeply chocolately mousse. And my wife liked the table cloth. Is this 100 characters yet?

All of my friends know how much I love all the Southern favorites at Cleburne's in Houston. Well, this is the Cleburne's of Southern France. All the classic French comfort foods, Beef Bourgnion, roasted chicken with wine sauce, creme brulee, and local Macon or Burgundy wine. A great value with the prix-fix menu. Welcoming employees who don't speak much English, but made an effort to make us feel at home. We never saw any Americans, so that speaks volumes. Tres Bien!
