“An enjoyable lunch and dinner to start a wonderful week on the canals”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

We stayed at Hotel Restaurant le Rive Gauche for one night prior to our week on the canals. The staff were very friendly, the hotel clean and comfortable with lovely views and I would stay there again if in the area. The lunch and dinner we had was above expectations and most enjoyable, complented with a very nice wine. The restaurant was busy on both occasions and the service a little on the slow side but not too bad considering the full restaurant. Well worth a visit.

This hotel is nicely situated by the river with a terrace out the front near the river. It is a 10 minute walk across the bridge to the centre of Joigny. The rooms are traditional modern hotel style and reasonably comfortable without having the latest decor. The receptionist seemed very busy serving drinks as well as the usual reception duties. There was a convenient cellar under the hotel to store our bikes as we were on a cycling holiday but they had to go down the steps. It would be wise to book your evening meal in advance on a Monday night as almost all the other restaurants in the town are shut on a Monday night. The evening meal was good but to get reasonable value you had to have two or three courses. Wine choices were good.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a river view and others a garden view.

We stayed at the Rive Gauche June 22-28th 2012.

We had a very large room on the 3rd floor over looking the Yonne river.

The entire staff was very friendly and made us feel at home. All the staff spoke English.

We stayed there many years ago and it was very good. (1990's)
Our room was spotless and the maid service every day was perfect.

The big surprise to us was the restaurant. It was so much better than years ago. We had excellent duck, lobster and lamb dishes and fantastic desserts. The service was impecable.
The wine list was extensive and very reasonable. The breakfasts were also first class. We have also stayed at the sister property La Cote St Jacques.

Frankly we perfered Le Rive Gauche.

Also the grounds surrounding the hotel and restaurant are gorgeous.

We will return.

The restaurant was very busy on the evening we ate here, with, amongst others, a group of about 20 people for a business dinner, so the service was a little slow to start with. The food was well worth waiting for though, our only criticism was that the potions were a bit too big. Everything was cooked and presented beautifully, and we thought very good value.

The owner has learned nothing from her 3 starred michelin father across the river. We had high hopes - dashed I'm afraid. The reception staff and waitresses are fine. Joigny is an interesting place, ad the hotel is in a lovely setting. we went for the meal, and the evening was warm so tables were on the terrace. There was room to have spread tables around - some were - but ours was underneath an awning squashed in with several other but we sat down and were about to make the best of it, when the couple next to us lit up. Under an awning this was a problem for non-smokers. My partner went in and asked if we could move, and we were treated with utter contempt, moved one table on really rudely by the owner. It was embarrassing for us, and everyone else, but as we were eatng a meal, and my partner siffers from breathing problems, we felt it would ruin our evening. We were still under the awning others smoked, and we wished we had just left, but Joigny didn't look exactly full of restaurants. We have visited France for many years, but Mme Lorain was the worst hotel and restaurant owner we have ever encountered. The hotel is like a reps stopping off place - and the food is very average. avoid!

An attractive commercial hotel on the river Yonne. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff was very helpful, however we were disappointed as the lack of internet availability unless you had your own computer. The dining room was upscale, the service was excellent and the food was delicious. The breakfast, which is not included in the room price, was extensive.

Many visitors to Joigny will be there because of the Locoboat canal boat hire base. A very short walk from the marina (virtually next door) is the Hotel Restaurant le Rive Gauche. We ate there at the end of 3 weeks in France (2 weeks Paris, 1 week on the Burgandy Canal). The meal we had at the Rive Gauche was the best we had in France and at 30 Euros for 3 courses was excellent value for money.

They can offer an english version of the menu which we recommend because I would not have chosen the excellent fish dish I had as a main course from the french menu. The staff also speak english so if your french is limited then no problem.

The restaurant is very popular and we recommend walking down during the afternoon and making a reservation. We had dinner there but the lunch menu looks like extremely good value.
