Lovely location, view of river. Ask for room 31 but not whilst I'm there! Plenty of room.
Sylvie est tres charmante
If you want character this is for you

Private parking is in a garage in the next street, a bit of a hassle, but better than searching for free parking locally

Hotel St. Jean is right across the street from the River Boat dock (Quai Gambetta) with an excellent view of the river in a quiet location behind the war memorial. Its rooms are large and airy with big bathrooms as befits an old building with antique doors and windows. Sylvie and all the others at the reception are extremely friendly and helpful; both online and in person. However, it does not have an ascenseur, so remember that the premier etage is the second rather than ground floor, especially if you have heavy luggage.

Hotel St. Jean is within easy walking distance of an excellent pedestrian street (Rue de Strasbourg) across the river lined with outstanding restaurants and bars.Chalon is a very pretty town worthy of a couple of days' visit after a river cruise. Despite its designation as a 2 Star Hotel, St. Jean provided the amenities and service of a 3 Star Hotel for a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Rooms inthe front are quiet and ahve excellent views.

Set in the heart of Chalons the Saint Jean is a family hotel reigned over by the lovely Sylvie, She's been doing this since 1979 and you may have thought her enthusiasm for the trade might have diminished over the years - not a bit of it! You're welcomed as if you are a treasured visitor.......and it's lovely.
We stayed in a family room and the wifi didn't work, the bath had no plug and the picture on the tv was grainy, but you knew it was going to be like this. The hotel is old (but choc a bloc with character) and plainly doesn't have the big bucks to be thrown at it, but its none the worse for that - there are thousands of anodyne hotels in France, this isn't one of them. The breakfast was also excellent with no charge for children.
So, if you're looking for a place with genuine French charm (mixed with a tiny element of Fawlty Towers) this is for you. If you're a fan of out of town chain hotels, it most certainly
isn't!
Unfortunately, we arrived late and didn't get time to see much of Chalons - what we did seemed pleasant enough.

we stayed for a stopover on way south. Basic, but clean comfortable, very french. Free wifi, helpful staff.
Close to the river and the centre of town for a choice of restaurants and pavement cafes.
Altogether very pleasant and good value.

we stayed for 1 night on our way south. les than 5 minutes from highway. Old building that is in desperate need of some fresh paint ;) but room was clean, beds were good, parking is easy in front of hotel. staff was very friendly and breakfast was basic but served with a smile. positive vibes in this place! decent price for basic room.

The building had charm, no doubt. The staff were wonderful. The decor was like being inside a Georgian child's toybox. It felt so comfortable and homely, and the staircase was epic. Overall we liked being in the hotel (apart from advertising that the room had a TV on the website IN ENGLISH then the tv not having a single english channel. Come on guys, it's 2010!

The only complaint - the town was not so friendly. We were there for a friends wedding which was in the nearby (5-10 mins) village of Sennecey-Le-Grande. Obviously we (and other guests) wanted to be able to sample lots of the local wine at the wedding without driving back. The local taxi firm saw this as an ideal opportunity to rip myself and my friends off to the tune of 50 euros per trip. We were universally disgusted as this was nothing more then ugly profiteering. We found a similar attitude towards visitors at the local restaurants and cafes. I dont believe for a second that locals are being charged 20 euros for two croques and two coffees, delicious as they were.

I'd go back to the hotel, but not sure I would be too quick to visit Chalon-Sur -Saone.

Lovely hotel which would not be anticipated from its outward appearance. Very spacious room, prettily decorated with a high ceiling
and a big bed. Bathroom not so great as it doesn't have a proper shower, but rather a handheld shower attachment over the bath. Free wifi in the room which is very handy. Breakfast not great value it has to be said - you would do better in a local cafe. Location of hotel is fantastic, both for the town centre and the restaurants which are across the bridge on rue Strasbourg. A lovely hotel which is great value for money.
