“Somewhat mixed experience”

First the good points. Service is in general very friendly and helpful; staff speak at least some English. The hotel is very clean throughout. Room price is cheap. Buffet breakfast is copious. Restaurant is good (but see caveat below). Location is good: ten minutes’ stroll from the delightful Old Town, twenty minutes from the harbour, but rather further from the SNCF station; buses to Carnac and Quiberon stop nearby.

We spent a week here in June. Our room was smallish (normal for Kyriad), with a view onto the car park, which did not worry us, since we spent most of our time out. However, it had a serious drawback: there were no drawers, no room safe and very little shelf space. We were not quite reduced to living out of our cases, but very nearly.

The hotel has a demi-pension (half board) option, which we took, and found very good value at an extra 22 euros a head for breakfast and a three course dinner. Drinks are not included, but the restaurant has a good sensible wine list (a good few half-bottles; good wines by the glass, adequate cheap pichets). Just one warning about dinner: you really need a good appetite. The main courses tend to be over-garnished (e.g. little bits or courgette with spicy dressing, plus a bit of broccoli, three varieties of potato, rice and a sort of small poppadum). You may find yourself leaving much of this so as to avoid indigestion. The cooking was rather variable: delicious honey-glazed pork, excellent navarin d’agneau (lamb stew), very good and very substantial fish soup – but rather dry salmon, rather tough steak, and on one occasion the fish soup was served lukewarm.

Vannes is a very pleasant town, with good transport connections, but of course it’s in Brittany, which means that it frequently stops raining; high season is just July and August.

Recommended overall.

I stayed here for one night in September after returning the rental car in Vannes.I wanted a hotel reasonably close the town centre and to the station to catch the train to Paris the next day. The hotel happily arranged a taxi for us for the short trip to the station.

I paid 70 euros for sole use of a comfortable and very clean double room, although smaller than rooms in hotels outside main towns, as you would expect.I asked for a room overlooking the rear (and the carpark, paid parking but inexpensive) and it was very quiet.

I really enjoyed the old centre of Vannes and it is an easy walk (10 mins) to the towncentre from the hotel.
