Really excellent submarine museum. Bit of history of Lorient and it's role in WW2 and the cold war - various submarine articacts - a potted history of the cold war in pictures/graphics which could be understood by all - tour of a cold war sub that is perched on the harbour side. Really interesting and really well done

This is relatively easy to find and to get a free park. Many of pens are now used by local contractors as warehouses and workshops. The Flore tour is on the hour, but expect a wait because of tour groups and a limit on the numbers allowed in. It has a useful bookshop. We simply chose to walk around and see for free. The tour inside was not running at the time of our visit. The sheer size and strength of the structures is worth the drive into town. The harbour is also interesting with several submerged wrecks and numerous modern yachts. Doenitz had his HQ across the water. The plaque to Gen Stosskopf of the Resistance can still be seen on the wall and his is an interesting story of itself, acting as a double agent for the Royal Navy until being arrested and executed in 1944.

We visited the Flore Submarine Base and purchased tickets for the submarine tour and the museum tour. The submarine tour was brilliant, really interesting information given via headphones in English, we learnt such a lot from this tour. We then went onto the museum and was asked to leave car keys, mobile phone, passport etc in order to be given the headphones etc to listen to the commentary in English. We left the kids presents theyd bought in the gift shop!! The first part of the trip round the museum is solely in French so the headphones are a waste of time and the rest of the tour that was in English was really poor in comparison to the Submarine. We completed this musuem tour in 5 minutes, really disappointing. You also cannot really see the majority of the pens where the subs were housed. If youre in Lorient or close I would say pay to see the submarine but we drove 150 mile round trip and wouldnt really recommend it, plus the submarine is only open on a Sunday when the rest of Lorient is closed!!

If one has any interest in WW2 and what happened in and around Lorient, then this is a must see! The facts that the multilingual guides put forth are simply too big to fully comprehend - such as there were 20,000 workers on this site alone! - but a tour of the base and the sub museum is such good fun.

I found this absolutely riveting and so did the family - they're well used to my obsession with WW2 German concrete - but this place is in a lovely spot and we even took the time to stop and have a drink in the bar/cafe!!

Recommended. Visited in summer, 2011

Great museum open daily, sadly the other museums on site were not open which was very frustrating as we were very interested in seeing more of the submarine bases history especially during WWII.
