Quite an impressive castle, as it is huge. Surrounded by what seems to be a small river, it still has 13 standing towers. It is truly one of the best preserved fortified castles in France and maybe even in all of Europe. There are 3 enclosures: the first one to protect the actual castle itself. The second one where everyday living occurred and where people fled when the castle was attacked. The third one to protect the keep.

Audio machines were handed to us to help us understand the background of every tower, moat and enclosures. It was a good walking opportunity. The view from the top gave us a splendid view of our surroundings and of Fougeres itself.

“A Castle to Remember”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

Fougeres is well worth a visit if you are in the area. The Chateau de Fougeres, a fortified castle, can take most of the day to see. You are supplied with a small radio devise that explains the different parts of the castle and the history as you walk round. It is not an easy walk and requires some stamina to complete the tour. There are plenty of places to eat in the town. To complete your day why not take the miniature train journey around the town and see the views without any effort. Well worth €5.

“Awesome Castle”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

When we planned our stop in Fougeres we thought to be here an hour or two and ended up spending the whole day! It is definitely on our list of places to come back to and spend a couple of days. The castle is amazing to explore and definitely something young children would enjoy. There are videos in the various towers to fill you in on the history and lots of places to explore, without worrying about what your children can hurt!

“Very Good Castle Tour”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

We stopped in Fougeres for lunch, and were happy to take a good long walk around this very interesting medieval fortress. The audioguides were excellent, explaining what was happening and the development of the chateau over 5 centuries, including the French view of several of the periods of war betrween England and France.
