“Great location and friendly staff”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

Location was fantastic and Fougeres is a fantastic base for exploring the surrounding areas of Brittany and Normandy, especially Mont St Michel and the medieval town of Vitre. The hotel is a good standard 3 star hotel, just don't expect luxury, which at the price you pay anyway you must expect luxury. The triple room I stayed in was comfy enough, and fitted three people in well. The breakfast was good, and even included local specialities. The staff were very friendly, and were always willing to answer our questions about the area and the way to get to

We had a small recently redecorated room overlooking the round about (the address is misleading as it is not a square - place) but a roundabout. It was very hot and opening the window was not really an option given the traffic. Only 2 car park spaces at the front but a car park in the back street about 100m from hotel. They have a garage where we were able to lock up our bikes. Their website shows great pictures but in reality part of the hotel is quite dated, and given it is off the street, it is not the quiet retreat one could expect

Fougeres was an unexpected stop on our trip between Normandy & Loire - what a pleasant surprise, great little town with a castle, moat & manicured gardens! A one-night stay at this hotel was perfect - there is a great walking tour you can take from the hotel.

We found easy street parking across the street for the evening (moved the car by 9am the next day to a free parking lot about 5 minute walk away - ask front desk for directions).

Front desk staff were lovely & pleasant - helpful with any questions. I believe their reception closes at 10pm, so do email ahead of time if you think you will be arriving later.

Room was completely renovated & clean, spacious modern bathroom with rainhead shower. Wifi was free and consistent.

Soundproofed room, didn't hear a thing at night. Big comfy beds. Elevator handy for taking luggage to the room. We had a regular room with 2 queen beds.

The price is a bit higher than what I'd expect in an un-touristed town, but would be good value in any city (or an exceptional value in Paris)

Our SatNav did not help our finding of this hotel which is not in a particularly difficult bit of the town (beware those using TomTom). Reception was perfunctory. Our room was up some awkward stairs with no lift and our room door was probably the smallest door in a modern building I have ever encountered, so not the easiest for getting cases in.

Indeed most things about the room were compact, though the bed was of a reasonable calibre. There wasn't much storage space. The en-suite shower room was manageable and I was pleased to find a razor socket (hidden in the hairdryer!). The toilet was separate. There was no evidence of air-con but there was radiator which kicked out unnecessary heat. Wifi functioned well. There was flatscreen TV with some international channels. Strangely for France the room had tea/coffee making available.

Breakfast was reasonable with facilities to boil an egg. The croissants were on the small size.

Overall this was Ok but it's not on my list of "must try again".

We've stayed in a Deluxe Room (nº 302), similar to a Junior Suite. Very nice decoration, spacious room and bathroom with a very nice shower! Very good soundproofing in this room, having double windows, separated by some centimeters. The complimentary gâteaux de la Mère Poulard (4 biscuits) and 1 bottle of complimentary water was a nice touch!
Great location, walking distance to the castle and the historic centre.
Our fee (127€/night) didn't include breakfast and we decided to go to a boulangerie and buy some sandwiches and cakes, so can't comment on that.
Friendly staff at the reception, specially a young man, which gave us a map and indicated us a walking tour over the old village which was reallly worth it!
If I was picky, I'd say that the digital safebox was not working (maybe lack of batteries) and that the curtains didn't block completely all the sunlight. But, those were very little details that didn't prevent us of having a GREAT stay!
Make sure you visit the Castle as it is totally worth it!

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe room! It is worth it!

Nice clean room and excellent for a business traveller. New bathroom was functional and clean. Toilets - What is it with newly built bathrooms having toilets several feet off the ground. I'm nearly 6 foot tall and even I have to perch on the thing. I feel sorry for anyone shorter, your going to feel like your 6 years old again, swinging your feet.

Look out for the car park - It's not easy to find - And make sure your Sat Nav is updated, or the one-way system will have you in knots!

Room Tip: Dont eat in the restaurant...

We went to Fougeres as we have a daughter and her family living in Lecousse and there's no room in their house. This hotel is very well placed in the town and offered a comfortable and well equipped if small room, but with a roomy bathroom with bath/shower, and all newly refurbished and decorated. We had obtained a bit of a price deal, so that could explain why we were given a room on the 3rd floor! The staff were friendly and helpful, especial thanks to Jerome and Erik, both of whom speak good English. We made use of the locked garage for our car although thought €8 a day was a little pricey but the only other option was on-street parking. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel but went to the local baker for Pain Raisin which we then took a local bar to eat with our morning coffee. We thought the town quite delightful, most attractive and interesting and thoroughly enjoyed spending a morning looking around the castle. All in all a very successful visit and we'd stay in this hotel again.
