As I am not a fan of the promenade beachfront restaurants where all the meals are described the same and the only difference is the color of the table clothes or umbrellas, finding this was delightful! Decor was under stated casual elegant without the kitsch factor of so many seafront establishments. Our party of three sampled the foie gras starter, langoustines and scallops, all of which were perfect. For the main course we ordered lobster, which was the best I have EVER tasted even in Maine, the ST. Pierre and another fish I am not familiar with. All were excellent and not smothered in sauce, but allowed to show their true flavours which requires the freshest of ingredients!

The service is typical French not terribly friendly bordering on rude, but the quality of the food allows me to overlook this. Would go back for a taste of the lobster alone!!!

“Cancale with a difference”

The whole meal was a wonderful experience. It started with a delicious cocktail accompanied by home made savoury biscuits. Before the hors-d'oeuvre, we were brought some absolutely delicious foie de canard with cauliflower mousse mises en bouche served in verrines. We then had oysters and foie gras followed by a generous, perfectly well prepared filet of cod. For dessert we opted for the Tatin tarte made with filo pastry. We had a lovely bottle of Muscadet. Coffee was served with petits-fours and the sugar, in the shape of starfish, came in individual little bags. From A to Z this meal was a meal to remember; no detail was spared; everything was a real pleasure to both the eyes and the taste buds. Congratulations to the chef! No doubt we shall go back to this restaurant when we are back in St Malo.

Wonderful place to try Cancale in its finest, oysters and langoustines, cider and delicious desserts! Coming back again here tonight.

“3 hours to eat lunch!? Yes please!”

This is a French restaurant which does what the french do best - lunch! Situated just a little away from the bustling sea front, it overlooks the bay of Cancale and, on a clear day, you can make out Mont St Michel in the distance. Cancale is famous for oysters - justifiably - we had some for a starter but the meal began long before they arrived. We were treated to a couple of amuses bouches - cracottes, pastries and a delightful salmon mousse, followed by a remarkable cauliflower and pate cream. The oysters were fresh as the dew and my scallops were perfectly seared on the outside - moist and tender within. My sea bass main was so fresh I felt obliged to secure it with a fork lest it make a break for the nearby bay! Accompaniment was a mixture of leaf vegetables with a perfect mix of light tomato flavour and crunchy texture. We washed down the above with a fragrant and delicious Muscadet. The rum baba dessert was unctuous (such a nice word!) smothered in chantilly and vanilla flavoured rum. Coffee and a choice of vintage Calvados rounded it all off nicely. Service was efficient and unobtrusive - highly reccommended.

“Special Gem”

As soon as you enter the "garden"...decking, stones, plant pots, all designed to echo nautical theme, you will have fallen in love with this delightful restaurant.
We visited on a cold October evening after a long journey, and the restaurant was not too busy. We had a seat at the huge plate window overlooking the bay, which in day time must be the best table in Cancale.
Our St Jaques fish dish was excellent. The service, by young staff and a very personable Madame, who spoke excellent English, was flawless. The whole establishment was crisply clean, welcoming, and food which could not be faulted. As with every restaurant in France, we ponder at the price of wine. In this case, 50cl of white wine cost cost 20 euro...a bit over the top.
As I looked down on the garden cleverly alluminated around the plant pots, I commented upon the name above the gate," Sylvie et Guillaume Tirel" and commented to my husband if there could be a connection with the Tirel Guerin in the next village where we were to eat the following evening. Our land lady confirmed there is a family connection, so it was therefore no surprise that Cote Mer would know how to do things just right.
The restaurant is at the edge of Cancale, as it is approached down the one way lane following the cliffs, so is out of the hubbub of tourist Cancale, and all the better for that.
Without hesitation...go there!
