“Restaurant service cold and unfriendly”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

My travel companion and I were drawn to their menu by the artichokes. The artichokes were good, but our treatment was brusque and even rude. When we asked if we could make a reservation for 1:30 lunch, the proprietor said no because, he said, "If we reserved at 1:30, we would show up at 1:45." Perhaps that should have been our cue to leave without making the reservation, but we consented to come at 1:00 to accommodate him, and asked if he would set aside 2 artichokes for us. When we arrived, and I told our waitress that we had reserved (just to make sure they knew we had shown up as promised), she brusquely took the menus away from us, apparently assuming we only wanted the artichokes, though we had planned to order other things in addition.
As I said, the artichokes were fine; the fish soup was okay (nothing special), and the prices were high. But it was the way we were made to feel -- unwelcome and unappreciated -- that causes me to give them 2 stars. It may be that it was an off day, but if so, other travelers will no doubt reward them with more stars.

My wife and me made a reservation for a room with sea view and were upgraded to a room with balcony on the second floor. Room # 7.

We had a wonderful view on the little bay.

We had dinner at evening which was very good although al little bit pricey.

We stayed at the "Le Continental" from May 23rd to May 25th (2 nights) and were very satisfied.

The "patron" and his spouse were very nice and helpful.

I recommend this hotel and would stay there again with much pleasure.

Room Tip: Room # 7 with balcony on the 2nd floor.

This hotel is on the quay where all the action is. A large building with a restaurant downstairs. We had a room without a sea view which was spacious and had a lovely bathroom with 2 basins and a decent size bath.Only one bedside light and no bedside table on one side which given the price should really have been provided. Did not take breakfast but had one unexceptional dinner, There are better options in the town for eating, Chez vincent for example just along the road

We try and stay here at least once a year and everytime the hotel improves in some way be it the bedrooms or the restaurant.
We have always found the proprietor and his wife the most charming and friendly hosts and they are the main reason for our regular returns.
A perfect place for a romantic weekend.

Room Tip: A room at the front overlooking the harbour - you will not want to leave

Hotel le Continental in Cancale is on the quai. Rooms facing the sea afford an incredible view of the sweeping rise and fall of the tides- truly amazing! However, after over 40 years of traveling to France and staying in more than 100 hotels, I must say I have never been treated as rudely as by the manager of this hotel. The property is considered to be at least in the top 2 in the town, but the unpleasantness of the manager makes it impossible for me to recommend without reservation. The views are amazing…

Room Tip: Requested a room with a balcony but was not given one. Sea front is essential.

Le Continental is a good hotel with a good restaurant.
We were in room 7, on the second floor with a balcony and great sea view.
The hotel is a non smoking hotel and you are not allowed to smoke on the balcony.
Our friends were in a sea view room at the first floor : no balcony but a very very wide window with a great view.
There is a parking very near the hotel where you can park if there are some places left... The hotel will explain you what to do to get a good price for the parking.
After diner, it is delicious to go out for a walk along the port.
We really had a pleasant stay.

The location of the hotel is great - right on the main road that runs along the harbor. The hotel is upscale, impeccably kept, and very clean.

Service was very attentive and pleasant; the owners speak English and will help you with anything you need. The breakfast was absolutely delicious! We also had dinner at the hotel one time, and it was very high quality, again with great service. The dining room (for breakfast and dinner) overlooks the harbor.

We booked the double room with sea view balcony, which was located on the second floor. Nice feature: this hotel has an elevator - this is not always the case for small European hotels. The room had a small refrigerator and provided glasses, which was nice because we picked up various local specialties like cider, Calvados, and Pommeau on our travels. The balcony was small, but very cute with bright geraniums framing our view of the harbor and ocean. I loved sitting out there, relaxing after a busy day of sightseeing, and planning our next day.

The bathroom was new, clean, and well equipped. The shower had a wall mount to turn it into a stand-up shower (again not something you will always find in Europe).

I don't believe any of the hotels down at the harbor have their own parking, but the city provides paid parking places. We stayed towards the off-season (middle of September), and never had a problem finding parking in the paid lots. It wasn't terribly expensive, because the lots are free overnight (I think from 8 in the evening until something like 10 in the morning).

Overall this hotel turned our stay in Cancale into a truly enjoyable occasion.

Room Tip: If you can, pay the extra money for a room with the sea view balcony. It is worth it!
