Or maybe more than small flaws, depending on your point of view.
The Hotel Kastel might have gotten another star from us if it were not for the fact that the shower in our room only intermittenly had hot water! In fact it never got hotter than a bit more than lukewarm. We were on the next to top floor and no one else, I see, has complained about this, so I guess it's down to a single anomoly. When we questioned the reception about it, they told us that it was probably because the hot water was low due to the fact that so many others had already taken showers! So, one is suppose to race for a shower first thing in the morning or not have hot water? The hotel was not even full. In any case, as I say, the hot water situation didn't get much better later in the day. We liked the room, didn't feel like moving again after unpacking and I simply put up with lukewarm water (my wife could shower every day at the nearby thalassotherapie center were she was going for daily treatment.) But if a real hot water shower is important for you, be sure your room has hot water.
That said, just about everything else about the place was really first class. The rooms are quite large for a typical French hotel, they were extremely clean and the cleaning people, reception and all but one waiter were very, very friendly, professional and helpful.
We were here on demi-pension and found the meals, for the most part to be reasonably good. Not super good, but good, nonetheless. In fact, we discovered a restaurant in the Hotel du Bac in the Saint Marine neighborhood of Benodet (see our review elsewhere) that was better, though a bit more expensive. The staff in the restaurant were, with the exception of one, very professional, courteous and attentive.
The last attribute cannot at all times be attributed to Gary (spelling?) who amused himself on two different days by spending ten minutes or so chatting up and cracking jokes to a group of young women sitting nearby. We waited for our coffee during this time, after asking that he please bring it with dessert. The dessert arrived but Gary then deserted us for his next turn at the ladies, who were, one must admit, quite amused. We weren't. The coffee arrived when he jolly well got ready to bring it, AFTER he had finished with his entertaining. We're an old couple, but certainly not prudes. So if the waiter wants to flirt with some young women, we have no problem with that at all. But don't do it when your other diners are waiting, Gary.
He began to pull the same stunt the following day. When we this time reminded him that we were waiting for our coffee (still a while after dessert had been placed on our table), he brought it to us and laid it brusquely on the table in something of a small huff and without a word to us. You know, like sorry to keep you waiting, or sorry, I forgot.
If you care to read any of my other reviews, you will see nary a word about poor service elsewhere. So I'm not the kind to normally complain, but Gary's inattention was pretty flagrant. Perhaps he's usually a lot more professional and he just couldn't help himself with these ladies. But he needs to learn to put work before pleasure, especially because those three ladies were not the only ones paying for his services.
But, all that is a shame because the other waiters, waitress, people who helped with breakfast, the ladies at the reception and the ladies who cleaned our room were all, as I say, completely professional and perfectly delightful. So don't let my comments about Gary influence you in any way about the hotel. We're just getting it off our chests!
The hotel is nicely situated across the street from the beach and reasonably quiet at night (at least while we were there.) The town of Benodet, by the way, is quite nice and near a lot of other things to see.
