At L'Hirondelle we were made to feel like personal guests of the owner, Jim Sharpe. Firstly he sent us a menu and asked for our choice for our first evening meal. He happily collected us from Issoire station, which turned out to be a round trip of about 50 miles! On the way back he gave us local history highlights, showing a real understanding and love of his adopted region in the Auvergne. The house is in a small traditional village, and is still being renovated but the guest rooms are all finished and beautifully furnished. We were offered drinks in the garden while Jim cooked our evening meal. The cooking is superb, absolutely top quality both dinner and breakfasts. We stayed two nights, enjoyed some lovely local walks and a swim in a nearby lake. Our stay is utterly memorable, for the food and the delightful house, but mostly for Jim's generous spirit of hospitality. We were very impressed, and went away thinking of Jim as a new friend. We and certainly hope to return one day.

We stayed here for 2 nights. We got there about 7ish the first night and dinner was already prepared, which was a lovely way to end the night. Breakfast provided for the next two days and so was dinner. Dinner wasn't included in our stay but just for an extra few euros it was worth it! Breakfast was included which was still great. Most of the people I went with had specific eating requirements which were all met. I had a really nice relaxing time, and the owner of the home was a great person very lovely man who made our stay more comfortable. I do recommend for people to stay if you love a nice quiet retreat away from the city life. Worth it!
Jim Sharpe was a fantastic B&B host. He is passionate about ensuring his guests are comfortable and treated like royalty.
We opted for dinner and breakfast each night for the two nights we stayed at l'Hirondelle (we wished to stay longer if only for the glorious food!). The extra premium was worth every penny; we enjoyed everything from charcuterie, fromage, French pastries, salads, antipastos, homemade dips, carefully selected wines and satisfying meals made individually to order by our host, Jim, a retired chef by trade. Our vegetarian, lactose and gluten-free requirements were seriously considered and catered for without a fuss. Thank you very much, Jim, we are most grateful.
As we had no set plans for our stay in the Auvergne region, Jim kindly advised us to take a day trip to Puy du Dome (volcano views) via Clermont-Ferrand. We walked 1.8kms up a 700m incline. Total altitude = 1442m. We watched the tandem hang gliders' take off - scary!! We then returned back to base via Lac Chambon, Besse and Issoire. We stopped in Besse for a look around the village, which was nice.
Each large double bedroom was equipped with an ensuite, fresh linen and small toothpastes. Each room was also equipped with a kettle and a coffee pod machine to use as often as you wished. There were TVs in each room and an upstairs sitting room for guests to use at their leisure. Jim also had a vast collection of classic to current DVDs to watch whenever you wanted to, and there were both French and English television stations to choose from. There is also a back garden, which we did not get a chance to visit.
If you're looking for a tranquil, quiet, friendly, blissful and relaxing getaway, l'Hirondelle is the place to stay.
My experience at this b'n'b was nothing short of fantastic. The place itself is beautiful, clean and most importantly has comfy beds. Jim offers an inclusive breakfast and a not to miss dinner for €25. He was super accommodating to my friends and I who are a mixture of vegetarian, lactose intolerant and coeliac. Everything was delicious!
Jim knows the area well and kept us busy with a list of places and activities to see and do. But is also equipped for a quiet night in with a great selection of DVDs and TVs in all rooms.
Would definitely visit again and would highly recommend.
