If you are considering staying in a centrally located but peaceful fifteenth century french merchant's town house you could do no better than La Lanterne. It calls itself a B and B but at a standard and quality far above what you could expect in the UK.With sublime weather, a truly international food market, fine restaurants and an ambiance to die for, travellers of a certain age, minus kids will fall in love all over again in this location. An elegant continental breakfast featuring huge croissants, oven fresh french breads, local cheeses,Limousin butter and a range of yoghurts and cereals together with local strawberries, melons and berries,is tastefully presented on china and served in one of the only outdoor terraces in this jewel of a medieval market town.Fresh coffee and a choice of teas and juices will help you start the day perfectly. The hosts,Terri and Roy Bowen know every inch of the town, where to eat, where to park, where to do your laundry and they know the locals you may need including the doctor, the dentist, even the local gendarmerie.Best of all this couple are perfect hosts, tea, coffee or wine is always produced when you want it and Roy is a walking local guide book and historian with a wealth of stories, suitably larded in the French manner guaranteed to entertain. On a practical note the family do all the housekeeping themselves and the crisp white bed linen is all laundered and ironed by hand by Terri herself. These people put their heart and soul into their enterperise and it shows.Visitors are drawn primarily from the 'Yanks' the ' Aussies' and 'Kiwis' but the Uk is fast getting to know why La Lanterne is so popular. If you want to know more then visit www.sarlat.biz.It really is the 'Biz'!

We had a great four night stay at this most charming B&B. It has a great location, comfortable rooms and a pretty little courtyard where we enjoyed a few glasses of wine in the evenings chatting with our hosts and other guests. We picked up some great tips from fellow guests at breakfast which helped us avoid some of the normal ptifalls of travelling. Roy and Terri were a mine of info regarding the area and nothing was too much bother. Terri even did our laundry for us which on a six week trip was a great help. This was a special trip for our 25th wedding anniversary and Roy and Terri pulled out all the stops, we received a card at the breakfast table and a complimentary bottle of champagne to help our celebrations. (The breakfasts by the way were excellent, Roy's wonderfully prepared fresh fruit every morning is a picture in itself). Would I recommend this B&B - unreservedley YES!!! These guys' really enjoy looking after you and they made sure we got the best from out time here. Wherever we go next it will have someway to go to beat this experience.

We stayed at La Lanterne for a few days in July and had the most wonderful time. The room was very pretty and quiet. The breakfast, served in the courtyard, worthy of a 5 star hotel! This is the perfect place to explore the Dordogne, taking day trips to the surrounding villages and coming back to the peace and hospitality of our congenial hosts. This is special little hideaway for a romantic holiday but also a friendly place to enjoy with friends. We can not wait to come back!

My partner and I stayed in La Lanterne for 7 nights in July 2010. This stay was one of the highlights of a 6 week holiday in France. Sarlat itself is a wonderful town that is central to many of the great experiences available in the Dordogne and La Lanterne is an ideal base from which to enjoy the area. The B & B itself is very comfortable, homely and well equipped, and very well located in the old town. I had no problem with parking nearby. The owners, Roy and Terri, are very personable, have an excellent local knowledge and could not have been more helpful in making our stay enjoyable. Advice on matters such as avoiding roadworks and where to buy Lascaux tickets (not at Lascaux !!) minimised those little frustrations that all travellers experience.
