After 4 nights in sarlart having had various parts of a duck every night we wanted to eat something different. We were wandering around reading all the boards outside the closed for the afternoon restaurants. Then out from this delightful looking place in a picture perfect alley comes this guy asking if we had any questions regarding the menu....he was a real chatty character with a great sense of humour.....he is a Frenchman but has also lived in America so his English was good. The menu had many of the French classics I wanted to try i. e. escargots, cappracrio of beef, and wonderful seafood. Had a fantastic meal....the chef came out to meet all the diners. Wine and 2 entrees and 2 mains from the a la carte menu cost 63 euro. A memorable night.

A wide menu offering indigenous food; a moderate but more than adequate wine list, and an establishment run by 3 guys [one being the owner] and a chef. The 3 of them couldn't do enough for us, especially Philippe, who became a real friend. We were made very welcome, coming from the food prep area to shake our hands and offering us a free aperitif each night. Philippe was always on hand when we were doubtful about the nature of a wine or something we couldn't quite understand on the menu. We were in Sarlat for 7 days, and we ate there either at lunch or evening meal on 6 of them. Apparently, this is one of only 4 eating establishments in the town open all the year round [the others being seasonal] and is patronised by the locals out of season, which to me, tends to point to the value placed on the service, food and welcome.

We came across this lovely restaurant while strolling through Sarlat looking for a place to have dinner. The menu looked really good (and had an attractive kids' menu too) and the place itself was situated in a nice little road full of character. We thought why not try it?

We were very well received, and while perusing the menu we were offered a nice appetiser (on the house). As we had our 5 year-old with us we were asked if we wanted to order for him first so that he could be served as quickly as possible. We found that really thoughtfull and helpful. Our little one had the jambon and frites and ice-cream. He could have had one of three nice starters too but he declined to give it a try.

We both had the menu terroir at €22: one of us had the escargots for starter (absolutely delicious) and the other had the foie gras. For main course we both had the magret de canard which was also very good. For pudding we tried the house sorbets and the creme brulee.

We were also advised on the wine and did not regret the advice received.

The service was friendly, the atmosphere delightful and we had indeed a lovely evening. The restaurant is in a traditional building, full of charm.

We would recommend this lovely restaurant to anyone who likes good food, a nice and atmosphere in a nice part of the old Sarlat.

A party of five of us ate at this restaurant recently for dinner. The food and service were both dreadful. One of us had the rump steak - this was extremely tough, tasteless and over-cooked, served with a hash-up of potato and garlic and a limp piece of cabbage. I wouldn't have fed this to the local dog, let alone served it in a restaurant,
Two of our party had salmon de pave - this was undercooked, virtually raw, and was also only served with the potato/garlic mess.
Service was very slow, waiter unhelpful.
Altogether a very disappointing dinner and not recommended. Don't go there, you will be disappointed!

Possibly the worst and over-priced restaurant in Sarlat. Avoid like the plague. We had only just arrived in Sarlat (23 May 2009) and went out for an evening meal. Although quite familiar with some of the good restaurants, having stayed there before, we wanted to try something different.
We ended up at Au bon Chabrol in one of the little narrow sidestreets. The food was terrible, half-cooked cheap steak swimming in some non-descript mustard sauce (out of a jar by the looks of it!). The steak knives (???) could not cope with the toughness of it. The local speciality, potatoes Sarlardais, must have been cooked by a 'chef' born and raised in whatever country but certainly not France.
Service was as desinterested as it gets and the prices were far too expensive for what you got. The previous comment by a Frenchman in respect of this restaurant, "Mc Donalds is far better!" is certainly true. Avoid...please! I stopped people that night from getting a table there telling them it was no worth whatever they were charged.
