We ate dinner here and were the only two in the restaurant. My wife had the dorade which was cooked "OK". I had a texan pizza ( beef mince meat, onion and mozarella cheese, but without the olives). The pizza base was very good - thin, crisp and well cooked - but the topping! All the ingredients on the topping were undercooked. The minced beef was luke worm and just this side of rare. The worse part was that the juice (or water?) from the minced beef (or was it minced veal which always releases water during cooking?) super saturated the pizza base. In any event the liquid from the meat left a lukewarm pool in the middle of the pizza which ruined a perfectly good pizza base. This restaurant confirms my suspicions about not eating at a restaurant that has its staff waiting at the door to usher you in. If my wife's fish had been less than "OK", my rating of this place would have been "terrible" - best to avoid if possible.

We were looking for lunch, and weren't quite sure what we fancied to eat. Having looked around the medieval part of Sarlat at the many restaurants on offer, (some of which we had enjoyed a meal at before), we thought we would try this restaurant .
From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look that inviting, but once we entered, we were pleasantly surprised. There was a busy vibe to the place, and we were offered a table for two straight away.
A good selection of meals on the menu, from the traditional cuisine to pasta and pizza.
We both enjoyed our main course (Duck salad, and freshly cooked pizza), and we followed that by having a coffee gourmand .
Just one embarrassing moment for the staff, which we fortunately saw the funny side of. My café gourmand selection on sweets had somehow been "seasoned" with ground salt and pepper!!
Once we alerted the waitress, she was very apologetic and replaced it with a new plate straight away.

Polite staff , and good service.
Would try again

This was our favorite restaurant in Sarlat. We chose it after looking at the posted meals. There were many choices of menus of the day from 8 euros to 20 euros. We chose the 14 euro menu. The dinner started out with a tureen of home made soup (given at each table) A nice touch. This was followed by fresh salads and then our entrees one of which was roasted duck leg and the other French country cassoulet, both delicious. Creme brulee for dessert and 1/2 bottle of local red wine for 8 euros. The evening was cool so we opted to eat indoor. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the waitstaff could not have been more friendly and helpful. We got there early but the place soon filled up with many locals and families as well as some tourists. If you want to nice meal at an excellent price, the Taverne Du Croquant is the spot for you.

We come to Sarlat a few times a year, and sadly an excellent restaurant 'Couleur Jardin' has closed since our last visit. So we went to the restaurant (this restaurant), as it was adjacent, had a nice interior, and busy...all good signs...

That is the best bits...When we asked for a table the patron was less tham enthused to accomadate us, and my wife already had her suspicions...When we were sat, our waiter came, not even a lukewarm reception from the waitor, which was strange because he was chatty with the locals!

We ordered, and the meal arrived, and within a few seconds we we're amazed to find a caterpillar crawling on my wife's salad. We approached the waitress, and what was more amazing was she didn't even apologise, she just said 'oh' took the plate, as if it was normal for them. Then the same plate arrived with new garnish, served now by the parton, with no apology.

After the 'New' dish arrived, we'd only just started eating, when the neighbouring table asked the waiter who took our order for some salt, and he just snatched it off our table without asking if we had finished using it. I then had to ask him to return the salt, which he did, and practically threw it on our table.

They also had the nerve to charge us......

I've lived in France some 6 years, and i speak French but this restaurant does not cater for "tourists", reading some other reviews, the same tone seems to be true for other... Amazingly the meal was decent, except for the extra wild life they throw in.

I will never eat here again, not even if my life depends on it, i don't recommend anyone else eats here neither!!!!!!

The first thing you will notice when browsing menus of all the restaurants in Sarlat - and there are many - is that there seems to be a huge surplus of duck to be shoehorned into everything where possible. That's great, if you like duck every night, but twice a week is enough for me. O.K., so you can't avoid it - duck confit, margret of duck, duck cassoulet and oozing out of every doorway - foi gras de canard by the lorry load. What makes La Taverne du Croquant stand out from the rest is its slightly wider menu choices that embrace such alternatives as fish, lamb and beef. In addition to this, the ambiance is superb with its stone vaulted ceiling, English speaking waiters and terrific value prices. If approaching the restaurant from the Rue de la Republique, you may mistake it for a pizza parlour - don't be fooled - that sign relates to the upstairs level. Go down the steps into the older part of town and you will find its other entrance. Great food, great value and a great atmosphere. Try somewhere else, but you will come back again and again as we did.
