When we first visited Sarlat 10years ago the Bedain was one of the best restaurants in Sarlat. We returned this year to check out if the recent negative reviews of the restaurant were really correct. Unfortunately they were correct. The menu featured items (eg salmon) which when requested were off the menu. The numbering on the tables was via a piece of sticky torn paper with a number written in biro. Fish meals were advertised as all being with rice. When delivered the rice had been replaced without any comment with what can only be described as a largely inedible 'bubble and squeak' . Very very poor meal.

We tried the menu of the day which was disappointing, except for the ommelette which was excellent. The bread was old as was the dessert. The staff were nice, no doubt doing their best with a very low patronage.

This restaurant (in a beautiful spot in Sarlat) was simply terrible. The staff were surly and the food was awful, bordering on being inedible. The Sarlat Potatoes (Pommes De Terre Sarladaises) were soggy with goose fat and the rest of the food was just under whelming (the bread which was served with a dirty carafe of water as we waited for the meal to arrive was stale). I can't believe that we sat through it and didn't just get up and leave like the French family next to us. Give this place a wide birth!

Ok, this is in a calmer area of the center, prices are reasonable and the dishes are well garnished. The staff is very kind (this young lady only worked their this summer) but very helpful and quick (OK, at one point maybe even too quick taking my dish away without asking if I had finished !).

Even though I recommend this place, I still want to point out that IF you have the possibility to prepare where you want to eat, then you want to check out places that are a bit lost in the nature, maybe one of those famous "Tables d'hôtes" or at the farm where you are sure to eat LOCAL (when eating Foie Gras, the region not having an AOC (the product being linked to it's geographical origin) raises the chance that your piece of delicious liver actually comes from Russia, Romania or elsewhere))

So thumbs up to the service, price and hospitality. Quality of food was medium to good (ie pommes de terre salardaises overcooked and maybe even at some point, more than you can eat, which is a bit of waste to me) but that little minus goes to the fact that you're maybe not eating...FRENCH

Never look for a place to eat when you're hungry

It was market day, so we walked a bit off the tourist path and this outdoor dining spot looked inviting under a big tree. We got the 'menu" which was a great price for the amount of food - 4 courses. The scallops in a crispy pastry were wonderful. Service was good.
