“quite rural retreat away from work”
Reviewed August 24, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Rural farm house in lovely countryside .The farm house is spacious with log burner in the kitchen and open fire in the lounge very cosy in the evenings. there was a big swimming pool and a patio with b.b.q which we used every day The shops are only a few minutes away by car,It had everything we needed. Plenty of places to see locally and not far from the border with Spain a day trip to sans sebastion was lovely. It has lots of bedrooms so would be great for several family members to enjoy a holiday together.

“Very disappointing”

We stayed at La Croutz for a week in August. The surrounding area is very beautiful and on arrival we were very excited to see the front of our beautiful new home for a week.
However on entering the house our hearts sank. We had booked the house based on the description, for instance 'Stunning' and 'Décor; charming, modern, clean and bright' and photographs, for instance,' Stylish Japanese furniture photo shoot in our living room' this is misleading as it gives the impression that the Japanese furniture is actually in the house, but it is not.

On our arrival we found a note telling us that there was no hot water in the kitchen or downstairs bathroom (& this remained the case for 3 days). The house didn't appear to have been cleaned properly. There were cob webs and dust everywhere & insects in the ceiling light uplighters. In the kitchen there were ants crawling on the work surface and sink. The sink was dirty the plastic wash bowl was dirty and had a crack in it. We found big clumps of hair on carpets that needed hoovering. The carpets were very old and there were enormous stains on some that looked like bleach.

We couldn't use the downstairs bathroom at all because there were so many beetles that seemed to be gaining access through there. We spoke to the 'caretaker' about the beetles and she said that there was nothing to do about it 'you just need to put something down' which she did not offer to do. We also spoke to her about the pool filters - there were lots of beetles in it from the first day which we scooped out, but the filters needed emptying. She said that they had all been emptied on Saturday. When we pointed out one which looked particularly clogged she couldn't get the cover off and her final response to it all was, 'Oh it'll do.' This seemed to sum up the attitude regarding the whole house - maybe it would 'do' if it were family or friends visiting but we had paid a considerable amount of money on our week away.

We have stayed in lots of old houses in France over the years and we have never felt the need to hoover and dust before we could even unpack. It was very disappointing especially as the house could be very beautiful and is in a lovely area.

We emailed the owners 2 weeks ago to make our feelings known but they have not responded.

Thank you very much indeed for taking the time to review the house. We always find feedback enormously helpful.
We replied to your e-mail of 10/9 on 21/9; so within 11 days. We're sorry it took that long to produce a full response but I wanted discuss all of your points with both my husband and our ex-house manager, as well as alerting our incoming house manager to your concerns, before replying to you. Although people have raised minor issues in the past, I've never had quite such an extensive e-mail before, encompassing the points that you raised above, so this required some investigation.
We're sorry that you felt that the house not was not as described. The house has changed very little since the photographs were taken other than various improvements, for example we’ve just upgraded many light fittings. The photograph you mentioned of the Japanese furniture was taken by a Japanese furniture company who hired our house for a photo shoot for their catalogue. On the website, we mentioned that the photo was part of this photo shoot. We’re sorry if it wasn't clear that these two particular pieces of Japanese furniture were not currently present in the house. We chose to use their photograph of the sitting room as their professional photographs are much better quality than ours. The caption was not intentionally ambiguous, but in order to avoid any future misunderstandings, we have removed this photograph from our website as we want people to have a clear and full understanding of what to expect on arrival at Lacrouts,
We've discussed the cleanliness of the house with our house manager. She was on site doing the external jobs (garden/pool) early on the morning of your arrival; then transferred into the house when it became vacant (10 am is our departure time). She works with someone else who helps clean the house and between them they put in 14 hours of cleaning prior to your arrival, which we would hope would be adequate for a five bedroomed house. However, we do apologise if between them they did manage to miss anything. We have passed this comment on to our new house manager a week ago to ensure that she knows that this is an area of particular concern to both our clients and us. We ourselves were the next guests to stay at the house. Our house manager assures me the house was cleaned to no different standard for your stay and ours and we found the place to be spotless.
Two carpets upstairs have become bleached because our guests, many of them children, have recurrently dropped pool towels on the carpet so the chlorine from the pool has bleached them in a couple of places. It was not feasible to change the carpets at the end of each season, particularly as long as the pool remained chlorinated. We have now upgraded the pool cleaning system to a green UV tube which means that there is now only a very minute amount of chlorine in the pool. It is thus our intention to replace the carpets this coming spring.
We’re sorry that there were bugs in the house and pool. We believe that the beetle situation occurs from us being surrounded by cornfields, which is very picturesque but does leave us open to a degree of nature trespassing on our property. This is again a point we have particularly raised with our new house manager who is currently looking into how the beetles can be best dealt with. Following you into the house the week afterwards, we found that there were indeed a small number of small beetles in the downstairs areas of the house, luckily generally at night. We were unable to find a point of entry so our new house manager will be seeking professional help to get rid of them. We assure you that they are harmless, however we do agree that they are not appealing.
On arrival we did find that the lid of one of the pool filters was jammed and it took my six-foot son to get it off, but we agree the situation should have been dealt with prior to your arrival. Now that it is in un-jammed, we would hope that the problem will not arise again.
During our stay, we threw out any items that we found in the house which were cracked/ broken etc, which this year comprised several water pistols, a frying pan scatter guard, a children’s game as the box was scruffy, a couple of plastic cups and a glass bowl which had been broken and put back into the cupboard, therefore not visible to our house manager. We always do a full purge each year, removing any broken or scruffy items. We’re always grateful to be told that things are missing or broken so that we can replace them. Following your comments, we are intending to redo the purge when we visit the house in spring to replace the carpets, thus making sure that there are no problems prior to the season.
We are sorry that there were problems with the plumbing. We always deal with problems as rapidly as we can. The plumber did sort the problem within three days, which perhaps was as quick as could've been hoped for, as you arrived on Saturday and Sunday is not a working day in France. We hope that having a dishwasher and kettle would have offset a degree of the inconvenience of not having hot water in the kitchen for a few days. We’re sorry that the downstairs bathroom didn't have any hot water for a few days but hopefully having three other bathrooms in the house might have lessened this inconvenience as your party was luckily only six people.
We’re sorry if you felt that our house manager's attitude was in any way off-hand. We've always found her to be very pleasant, friendly and hard-working and, having worked for us for over 10 years, she cares deeply about the house. She always works to a very high standard, so we are sorry to lose her back to the UK. We have every confidence that our new, bilingual house manager will replace her admirably.
We hope that the problems did not impinge on your enjoyment of your time in France. We had already offered you several hundred pounds in compensation, prior to your review being posted, which we hope will make up for any inconvenience incurred.
Many thanks for your kind comments about the house being beautiful and the lovely area.

Cordialement, Alison.
