“A very special place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2014

We were on a meandering trip down the South West coast and found ourselves in Arcachon. We sat in the square had a coffee and started an internet search for a place to stay. Then we found Hotel Ville d'Hiver....what a find it proved to be. The hotel has been designed with real care and attention. Our bedroom was comfortable, calm and stylish as are all the spaces in the hotel. We love to swim and the excellent pool hints of Sunset Boulevard (minus Joe's demise in the final scenes that is). Dinner in the restaurant was one of the best dining experiences we had on our 2 week trip. And then there is Olivier & Nathalene and the wider team..... a lovely group of friendly, interesting people who looked after us very well. What was originally intended as a 1 night stay became a 3 night stay so relaxing and enjoyable is this unique place.

We stayed for just one night in September. It was memorable for all the right reasons. The staff were impeccably courteous and friendly, especially Nataline who went out of her way to make us feel welcome. The restaurant produced some exceptional food, complimented by a fantastic wine list. The only thing missing was a highchair for our young one but, once again, the staff went above and beyond in making sure we were well looked after.

The rooms are stylish, quiet and private with an air of truly bespoke luxury. The Hotel Ville d'Hiver is a reason to visit Arachon in itself. Having been lucky enough to stay in so many wonderful hotels, this one really stands out. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Arcachon is a pleasant busy town with lots of nice shops, a lovely beach and some good restaurants and bars. The Hotel Ville d'Hiver is only a few minutes walk (uphill on the way back) from the lively centre but miles away from the bustle. In the fascinating Ville d'Hiver part of town, the hotel is an oasis of calm and relaxation. Time seems to stop when you arrive. The rooms are a good size and pleasantly decorated in a rather English shabby chic fashion but the main feature is the helpfulness of the staff. Breakfast in your room? Of course. Coffee or a cold drink on your balcony? No problem. The restaurant has a good menu and the service is relaxed but efficient. Breakfast is perhaps a bit limited but of good quality. We were a little late in the season to enjoy the swimming pool but I imagine you woukd feel as if you'd strayed onto a film set of some very French fin de siecle film. Minor grumbles? Our room had a bath with a shower attachment not a proper shower, and parking is a bit limited. But while it may not be a slick 5 star operation for charm and ambience it beats the socks of many grander hotels.

Room Tip: There are no lifts so ask for a ground floor room if you have any mobility issues.

Our 4-night stay in the separate cottage (aka l'annexe) was a good surprise to us. The room 13 has access to a large terrace in the garden, which made us feel being home.
The hotel architecture is one of the best and most typical you may find in Arcachon.
The breakfast choice is very limited and not renewed though, and dinner card not very good for value.

Stayed for two nights for my birthday, after a delayed train from Paris we were warmly greeted, quickly checked in and shown to our room on the first floor.

Even though it was gone 10pm and the kitchen had already closed the chef kindly stayed and cooked for us - quelle service! Service on the terrace was relaxed but professional with great wine choice and peaceful settings.

The room was always lovely and cool with the air conditioning, we had a spacious, furnished, private balcony and the rooms are finished to a very high standard. The bathroom is superb, great big bathtub with a shower option. The linen is great quality, big fluffy bathrobes, super soft blankets in the cupboard and pool towels provided! You certainly get what you pay for and an upgrade is well worth the extra 25€!

The pool... Forget Arcachon, the pool is where it's at! They brought us some drinks by the poolside whilst we lounged around, swimming, sunning and relaxing. It was heaven!

We did venture out for oysters and a walk along the beachfront, we even visited their beach restaurant, which is a great space and they do great cocktails. The hotel is ten minutes walk from the town centre - maximum! But it's a relief to get back to the tranquility of Hotel Ville d'Hiver.

They by far served up the best oysters and the staff are all really friendly and helpful; special shout out to Youssef who really took the time to make us feel welcome.

We will return hopefully! I would so recommend, better than anything else Arcachon has to offer, unpretentious and unspoilt by the madding crowd.

Merci à l'équipe à Hôtel Ville D'hiver!

We stayed 2 nights and I had booked a room category 3, to get a more spacious room.
At arrival they had problems to find our reservation and lucky we had the confirmation with us.
They did find it at the end under my first name.
The setting in an old water company is romantic and very stylish but the room No. 12 on 2. floor in a separate building, was still small and the A/C seemed not to work but we had a balcony door to open.
The bathroom had a window but no shower just a bathtub, no curtain etc.
First night we had a bottle of mineral water as there is no minibar in the room, which was empty the next morning and was not replaced. We ordered a bottle with barman and he wanted to deliver to the room, never happen.
The safe is on the floor, means lie down to use it !
The room had a nice color-scheme but not very good lights, too dark in the corner with the shelfs/closet and the safe.
The private parking is limited. The Hotel is about 15 min walk from the Arcachon promenade on a busy street during the day but quiet at night. To Top all there was a mistake with the invoice, breakfast charged twice, it was crossed off and handwritten adjusted, no sorry, no help with the luggage.

We have stayed at this hotel a couple of times and loved it. We have recommended it to friends who have also loved it. There is a very cool wine bar and restaurant in the hotel. Arcachon is lovely, worth taking a trip to the dunes and walking up the top as the view is amazing! Highly recommend le Cap Pereire restaurant on the way but you'll need to book.

Room Tip: We booked the middle floor with bath and a balcony and were very pleased
