“Barr on the Alsace Wine route”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2014

We decided to stop over in Barr based on Rough Guide comments, and the positive tripadvisor reports decided us on Chateau D'Andlau. Well done tripadvisor but poor marks Rough Guide!
We opted to find a restaurant in Barr so only had breakfast in the hotel, but we can happily endorse other reviewers' comments on the quality and character of the accommodation and service.
Having driven up the wine route from Colmar that afternoon through so many beautiful villages Barr was unexpectedly small, almost deserted and generally underwhelming. Maybe I could have researched it better or maybe everyone was getting over the Bastille Night festivities of the previous day and night.
The one restaurant we could find open in the village centre - Hotel Le Brochet - was busy with fellow tourists, and they looked after us very well with excellent regional food and wine.
In summary, Hotel Chateau D'Andlau itself is excellent for a stopover or as a peaceful refuge - but don't expect anything much from the town of Barr.

Room Tip: Our first floor rooms in the annexe faced the rear and were quiet. Rooms facing the road might expe...

We stayed at this great hotel in July 2013, our ninth stay, and found that the staff, service, hospitality and cuisine go from strength to strength.

Christian's creativity in the kitchen and the presentation of excellent quality food has no bounds.

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and it is hard to believe that it rates only two stars.

That helps though to keep the costs down and thus represent even better value for money.

We stayed here for 2 nights and were very happy with our choice. The restaurant was quite good and we thought a very good value. The decor may be slightly dated but it was extremely clean and comfortable. Our room was spacious and had a sofa for relaxing. The location is wonderful....an oasis in the countryside but very close to the town.

Basically good hotel; friendly staff - main selling point was the restaurant which was superb, with the most extensive wine cellar known to man. Excellent locataion to explore the local area - a short distance from the local village which was reasonably long walk

A small family run hotel in a beautiful part of France, right out of town so very tranquill and peacefull. Rooms are nice and clean ( if a little dated & no tea/coffee facilities in the room) beds are firm but comfortable and food is good (if a little fancy) plenty of bread through out the set menu. The local Alsace beer is very good. Would stay here again with no problems and would recomend to anybody who wants to expore this part of France / Germany.

The hotelis situated right at the top of the village, away from all roads and is very quiet. The rooms are average, but the food in the restaurant is exceptonal. The chef / owner tries very hard to match the latest in restaurant food fashion. The crab 'accras' or fishcakes were small balls, served in a cup like an ice ream cone. The fillet of lamb was cooked to pink perfection. The cheeses were perfectly ripe. The wine list is beyond belief [see the picture of me reading it], and the patron is very helpful in choosing wine. The local white wine he helped us select changed our entire belief of Alsace wines. It was very fine and dry, we had always avoided Alsace wines thnking they were all sweetish. Once a month there is a aln evening wine tasting costing about €30 -40. Probably worth co-ordinating with the date, but we missed it.

Strongly recommended for those who have time to spare, enjoy good food and wine, and do not demand perfection in their bedroom.

Room Tip: Check the web site for a wine tasting date before booking

Yes it is small and quite hotel with a lovely charm. During my stay the weather was very hot and I was lucky to have the superior room with a balcony. The hotel is nice and clean and the evening c restaurant is very good. The breakfast is O.K. except one thing- only one cruason per person (of course it is very good one).
