“Beautiful Manor House”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

Beautiful manor House in Barr on the famous wine Route. The House is lovely, breakfast room, garden and common room very well kept and clean. Our room wasn't one the best though, maybe because we were just passing through, it was extremely small, no wardrobe in the room. Staff was rather cold and impersonal. Maybe it was the wrong time of the year but still a smile is always a smile. We did have a perfect dinner though at the Brochet Restaurant.

Six of us arrived tired after a long walk carrying rucksacks but had to wait quite a time for attention.I agree with the previous comment that the owners had a very casual attitude to the tasks involved with running a hotel and later that evening saw a woman who had been ringing a bell in order to check in for over 20 minutes - I assume she managed to do so as I left her there!
Our room was toatally over-furnished with 2 single and one double bed plus various sofas and chairs and table making it very difficult to walk around. The bedside light was not working. The bathroom was in need of attention as the water did not run from the sink.
Our booking staed that internet was available free of charge in the whole hotel but the book in our room stated there was a charge of 5 euros. We tried to use it but it showed as an insecure connection.
Breakfast, however, was a redeeming feature and included fresh pineapple and water melon, cereals, breads, croissants, fried eggs, juices etc. However, there was no English Breakfast tea just green tea and Darjeeling.

The name, tariff and external grandness of the building led us to believe that we were staying at a well-run, professional hotel. Nothing could be further from the truth. The owners/operators appear to treat it as a part-time, casual business. For a place this size we were surprised to arrive at a sign saying that reception did not open until 3 pm. When 3 pm came and went we rang the bell which eventuallyt put us through to a young woman in a remote location who said she would be along shortly. She arrived at 3.20 and offered no apology.

Our room was small and looked smaller with heavy drapes over the bedhead. The windows were single glazed (very rare in France) allowing in noise from the busy road intersection outside. The paint on the exterior of the window was peeling, showing considerable neglect. Paint touchups outside the windows had not been completed. The lighting was inadequate for reading.

The bathroom was small with only liquid soap. The shower cubicle was very small with a curtain, making it extremely awkward. There was a big mouldy stain high on the wall. Grout was missing from most of the floor tiles. There was no plug for the hand basin.

Breakfast was good value at 9 euro. Fried eggs were included, which is unusual.

Hotel/restaurant Brochet, opposite the hotel de ville, where we had an excellent dinner with good service one night, might have been a better, and certainly cheaper, place to stay.

Barr itself was a disappointing with road traffic in every street making walking around hazardous and not enjoyable. The only highlights were the Vienna bakery, the Saturday markets and dinners at Au Jardin des Oliviers and Hotel Brochet.

This stay was at the end of Day 13 of our 25 day trek through Les Vosges.

A charming hotel ruled by a a happy family in a very beautiful house with painted ceilings. The rooms are clean and well furnished, although a little outdated. The breakfast is excellent and can be served in a beautiful room or outside (reserve in advance). The tiny city of Barr is a good spot to visit the region, half way from Strassbourg and Colmar!

Our family of four from Canada booked a room through booking.com. When we arrived we were offered two rooms for the same price which worked out better. This hotel was built in 1928 and has the charm of and older hotel with a grand staircase and afternoon tea. Rooms were average size with a beautiful view of Alsace vineyards. This is a very quiet town and we had difficulty finding a restaurant on a Tuesday night. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Really quaint, lovely hotel and Barr is the perfect base for road trips through the Alsace region. Try and get a Grand room if you can, its worth the little bit more. Breakfast is amazing. The hotel wasnt too helpful with providing travel tips but there is a tourist info within walking distance and they have great maps and english speaking staff.
